Stocks shoot higher in late-day rally after mixed data, commodities advance
Stocks shot higher right before the closing bell Friday after fluctuating on a mix of economic data. Analysts said the surge was the work of short-sellers who had bet that stocks would fall and then had to rush to buy when those bets turned out to be wrong.
A jump in commodities prices, which came on expectations that an improving economy will lift demand for raw materials, also fed the advance.
Advancing stocks outnumbered declining stocks by more than 3 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume was 1.86 billion shares.
New worries are weighing on investors including climbing interest rates and a weaker US dollar. Crude oil prices recently hit a six-month high above $66 a barrel, while the dollar on Friday sank to its lowest level in months against the euro and British pound.
Another more short-term obstacle is General Motors Corp.'s expected bankruptcy filing on Monday.
Friday's economic data prevented the market from finding a direction for much of the day. Commerce Department's report on first-quarter gross domestic product showed the economy contracted at an annual rate of 5.7 percent, a bit more than analysts' forecasts. Also, personal spending was revised lower.
All three indexes rose sharply for the week and, more importantly, had their third straight monthly gain. The Dow is up 4.1 percent for May, the S&P 500 index is up 5.3 percent, and the Nasdaq is up 3.3 percent.
Oil and gasoline prices continued a recession-defying march higher Friday, doubling in the past six months largely on optimism of a strengthening economy.
Copper advanced in London and New York, capping a fifth-straight monthly gain, as an improving economic outlook and a weaker US dollar spurred demand.
Gold and silver prices jumped Friday as the US dollar sank to its lowest level in months against the euro and the British pound.

Stocks jump on relief over good demand for government debt; Oil jumps to 6-month high
The bond market recovered on Thursday, bringing stocks along with it, a day after panicky selling pushed long-term borrowing rates to their highest level in six months.
However new data on the housing market -- a key area of concern for investors -- wasn't encouraging. The government said sales of new homes edged up only 0.3 percent in April, less than analysts expected, and a separate report showed that a record 12 percent of mortgage holders were behind on payments or in foreclosure in the first quarter.
Stock indicators rose more than 1 percent, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which gained almost 104 points.
About two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.4 billion shares, compared with 1.3 billion shares Wednesday.
Oil rose above $65 a barrel Thursday after OPEC - whose members produce about 40% of the world's crude - decided to leave the group's crude production unchanged and an inventory report showed an unexpected decline in supply.
Copper prices rose to the highest level in almost three weeks in New York after a report showed orders for U.S. durable goods jumped in April, raising speculation that the economy is improving and metals demand will rise.
Gold prices moved higher on Thursday as the US dollar lost more ground against the euro.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell almost 175 points Wednesday, erasing most of the previous day's rally as a jump in US government bond yields fanned concerns that higher interest rates will sap strength from the economy.
A steep drop in the price of the benchmark 10-year Treasury note pushed its yield up to 3.75 percent from 3.55 percent late Tuesday and to the highest level since November. Bond investors were selling on concerns that the huge amount of debt the government is selling to fund its bailout programs will ultimately keep Treasury prices down.
General Motors was heading toward bankruptcy after bondholders rejected a plan to swap a large portion of the troubled car maker's debt for equity in the firm.
About two stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.5 billion shares, essentially flat with Tuesday.
Light sweet crude for July delivery rose $1, or 1.6 %, to settle at $63.45 a barrel Wednesday, after reaching as high as $63.82 earlier in the session - after the Saudi oil minister said the global economy can handle oil prices between $75 and $80.
Copper fell in New York for the first time since May 21 as a stronger dollar curbed demand for the metal used in pipes and wires.

Stocks surged Tuesday, posting their first big win in a week after a research group said consumer sentiment rose in May to the highest level since September. Major stock indicators jumped more than 2 percent, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which added 196 points.
About five stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Mercantile Exchange, where volume came to 1.34 billion shares compared with 1.1 billion shares traded Friday ahead of the holiday weekend.
Oil prices rebounded Tuesday to their highest level this year as a triple-digit rally on Wall Street pulled crude off its earlier lows.

Copper prices erased earlier losses and closed near session highs on Tuesday as upbeat U.S. consumer confidence data and bullish technical momentum helped offset investor concerns over domestic copper sales by China.
Gold futures fell Tuesday for the first session in five as better-than-expected U.S. consumer-confidence data helped reduce gold's safe-haven appeal and as a rebound in the dollar curbed the metal's dollar-denominated prices.
