Stocks eased at the close of Friday's session, ending the week little changed, as investors went into a holiday weekend with lingering concerns about the economy. Major indexes ended down about 0.2 percent.
Stocks traded most of the day higher on Friday following better-than-expected results from several retailers including Sears Holdings Corp., Gap Inc. and Aeropostale Inc. But losses in financial and industrial shares wound up dragging the market down, marking the third time this week that stocks erased early gains to end lower.
About five stocks rose for every four that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to a very light 4.34 billion shares, down sharply from 5.77 billion shares a day earlier.
Despite the market's seesaw movements this week, all the major indicators finished the five-day period just barely in the black. The Dow rose 0.10 percent; the S&P 500 index rose 0.47 percent; and the Nasdaq rose 0.71 percent.
Oil prices rose Friday as the US dollar lost ground on growing woes over the creditworthiness of the U.S. and as a report showed that demand for oil is recovering in China.
A combination of worries about financials, currency weakness and technical strength brought more fund buyers in the gold market prior to the long weekend. Silver also rose.
New mining and energy projects are being cancelled faster than they are being finished as the global recession and resources slump intensifies.
And the weaker Australian dollar has helped disguise the impact of the slump in investment.
Figures released yesterday by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural And Resource Economics (ABARE) show a 16% rise in the value, boosted by the fall in the dollar, since last July.
Total spending on advanced projects is $A80 billion ($62 billion) at the end of April, 16 % more than in October and 12% higher than a year earlier, the Bureau said in its April report.
But the Australian dollar is around 13% weaker than a year ago against the US dollar, and has been down by 20% to 30% in the time since the last report on investment projects back in November.
ABARE said “The fall in the value of the Australian dollar is estimated to account for around half of the increased capital expenditure between October 2008 and April 2009".
The number of projects at an advanced stage dropped to 74, the lowest number since 2005 and down from 85 in October, in part as mining companies placed projects on hold because of falling commodity prices, the Bureau said.
"While the recent global economic downturn is not evident in the value of advanced projects, it is reflected in that only 11 new projects have been added to ABARE's list in the six months to April 2009.
"This compares with 31 projects being added in the six months to October 2008 and 58 projects being added in the six months prior to April 2008."

Stocks are pounded by worries over debt ratings
This week's sell-off accelerated Thursday, with major market indicators sliding more than 1.5 percent, cutting nearly 130 points off the Dow Jones industrial average.
Investors were unnerved that a credit agency warning about the British government's debt ratings could signal similar problems for the United States. Standard & Poor's rattled investors when it said Britain may have its rating cut because of rising debt levels. Many were already starting to think the market moved too high, too fast over the past two and a half months. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is still up more than 30 percent from 12-year lows in early March.
The Labor Department reported Thursday that continuing claims for unemployment benefits set their 16th straight weekly record.
About three stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.77 billion shares, down from 6.73 billion on Wednesday.
Oil fell 99 cents to $61.05 a barrel after rising sharply earlier in the week. Investors worried that continued sluggishness in the economy would reduce demand.
Copper fell for the first time in six days in London as worse-than-expected U.S. jobless figures and a more pessimistic outlook by the Federal Reserve curbed optimism that demand for metals will rebound.
Gold prices hit a 2-month high as the selling on Wall Street led investors to seek safety.

Stocks gave up a big early advance to finish moderately lower Wednesday after the Federal Reserve reduced its economic outlook for 2009 and bank stocks sank.
The central bank said it expects some business conditions to improve in coming months, but it also lowered its assessment of the economy for the full year and said unemployment could reach nearly 10 percent.
Advancing issues narrowly outnumbered decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.65 billion shares.
Oil's most active contract settled above $60 a barrel for the first time in more than 6 months after a government supply report showed stockpiles shrinking - crude stocks decreased by 2.1 million barrels in the week ended May 15.
Copper climbed for a fifth day in London, the longest advance in a month, on a weaker US dollar, rising global equities and falling stockpiles.
Gold futures rose Wednesday to the highest level in nearly two months, briefly topping $940 an ounce as the U.S. dollar dropped against the euro for a third straight session, increasing gold's investment appeal.

Summary
Beaconsfield Gold has reached agreement with Range River Gold Ltd ("Range River") whereby it may acquire a 75% interest in the Ararat Project, located 40km north-east of the Company's Stavely Project in Western Victoria, by funding exploration expenditure of $1 million over 4 years.
The Ararat Project includes the Mt. Ararat Deposit which was discovered in the 1970s. Drill intersections include 4.4 m at 12% copper and 8.1 g/t gold. The proximity of the deposit to Beaconsfield Gold's copper deposits at Stavely enhances the potential for the development of both deposits. At Stavely, Beaconsfield Gold has reported a shallow resource of 47,000 tonnes of contained copper at Thursdays Gossan, with further high-grade primary copper mineralisation outlined nearby.
Historical gold production of 600,000 ounces has been reported from the Ararat Project area which highlights the potential for significant gold discoveries.

Surprise drop in housing data checks market's rise
Stocks closed narrowly mixed in light trading Tuesday as the surprise drop in construction and a cautious outlook from retailer Home Depot Inc. led energy and utility stocks to pare gains.
Construction of homes and apartments fell 12.8 percent last month to the lowest pace on records going back a half-century, the Commerce Department said. Analysts had expected housing starts to rise.
About three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.44 billion shares, down from 5.49 billion on Monday.
In a positive sign for Wall Street, one measure of the market's uneasiness fell again after sliding 8.7 percent Monday. The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index, or the VIX, fell below 30 on Tuesday for the first time since September. It hit a record 89.5 in October at the height of the financial market meltdown. The historical average is 18-20, well below Tuesday's level of 28.8, but the decline signals that investors are more confident about the stock market's direction.
Oil rose slightly Tuesday, easing from an earlier six-month high over US$60 a barrel, as investors digested a tepid advance on Wall Street and waited for a supply report expected to show a dip in inventories.
A record low in new US home construction has dragged the price of copper down from a one-week high.
Gold prices increased in New York as the US dollar fell, boosting demand for the metal as an alternative investment. Silver also advanced.

Stocks jump on renewed optimism on housing, banks
A better-than-expected profit report from Lowe's Cos., an uptick in homebuilder sentiment and positive comments from analysts about U.S. banks revived investors' confidence in an economic rebound.
Buying accelerated later in the day when the National Association of Home Builders said its housing market index rose for the second month in a row in May. The report reflected growing optimism among builders, an encouraging sign that housing activity might be picking up.
Financial stocks also surged after a spate of analysts issued promising outlooks for the troubled banking industry.
The Dow Jones industrial average shot up 235 points, making up three-quarters of last week's losses. All the major indexes rose about 3 percent.
About nine stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.5 billion shares, up from 5.3 billion shares Friday.
Oil prices rose almost 5% Monday after a fire at a major American refinery and violence in Nigeria renewed supply concerns going into the summer driving season.
New York gold futures ended 1 percent lower on Monday as a Wall Street rally lessened safe-haven demand, triggering stop-loss orders and profit-taking.

Access of F21 Zone Achieved at Beaconsfield Mine
Beaconsfield Gold today announced that the F21 Zone has been accessed on the 1120 level, with driving on that level now exposing ore with strong grades over good widths in the Tasmania Reef. Developing access to the F21 Zone at the same time as completing footwall drives in the Western Zone has represented a very capital-intensive phase. Its conclusion will positively impact cash flow and allow renewed focus on optimisation of ore production.
The F21 Zone (named after the 2004 high grade discovery hole F21 - 9.0 metres at 37.5g/t gold) will form the focus for production in 2010.... - Web Site
