Stocks ended little changed Friday but held onto an enormous gain for the week. Investors are looking to another flood of corporate earnings reports next week to provide more signs that the economy is healing.
Homebuilders' shares climbed after an upbeat reading on the housing market. Construction of new homes and apartments jumped 3.6 percent in June to the highest level in seven months, beating economists' estimates.
CIT Group Inc.'s shares jumped 29 cents to 70 cents, on speculation that the troubled lender might be able to avoid bankruptcy. Its shares had tumbled 75 percent on Thursday after negotiations with federal regulators about a possible rescue fell through.
The number of stocks that fell narrowly outpaced those that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated trading volume came to 5 billion shares, flat with Thursday.
The Dow Jones industrials and the Standard & Poor's 500 index posted their best weekly performance since early March, when the market's spring rally began.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed the week up 597.42, or 7.3 percent, at 8,743.94. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 61.25, 7 percent, to 940.38. The Nasdaq composite index rose 130.58, or 7.4 percent, to 1,886.61.
The Russell 2000 index, which tracks the performance of small company stocks, rose 38.24, or 8 percent, for the week to 519.22.
The Dow Jones U.S. Total Stock Market Index -- which measures nearly all U.S.-based companies -- ended at 9,634.87, up 634.58, or 7.1 percent, for the week. A year ago, the index was at 12,850.50.
Oil closed above $63 a barrel Friday, posting its first weekly gain in a month, after U.S. housing data sparked optimism that a battered sector of the economy may be primed for recovery.
Copper futures rose, capping the biggest weekly gain in four months, as U.S. construction of single-family homes jumped by the most since 2004.

US stocks staged a late rally after economist Professor Nouriel Roubini, who is known as Dr Doom, was reported as saying the recession would be over toward the end of 2009. Speaking at a Chilean investors' conference, Professor Roubini said the world’s biggest economy was no longer in "free fall" and was likely to recover by the end of the year.
Shortly after the market close, staff at Professor Roubini's firm, Professor Roubini Global Economics LLC, issued a statement saying he had been misunderstood.
After consulting with a public relations firm, Professor Roubini an hour later issued a statement saying reports of his improved outlook were greatly exaggerated.
"I have said on numerous occasions that the recession would last roughly 24 months," Professor Roubini said. "Therefore, we are 19 months into that recession. If as I predicted the recession is over by year end, it will have lasted 24 months with a recovery only beginning in 2010. Simply put I am not forecasting economic growth before year's end."
Stocks spent most of the session moving sideways in choppy fashion as participants allowed the heady gains from earlier this week to consolidate. However, follow-through buying in tech helped offset weakness among financials and helped hand stocks another positive finish.
Denied a federal bailout, CIT Group Inc. saw its shares plunge 75 percent Thursday as bondholders scrambled to find an 11th-hour solution that would keep the commercial lender out of bankruptcy protection.
About two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5 billion shares, down from 5.5 billion Wednesday.
U.S. oil prices rose Thursday, tracking a late-day rebound on Wall Street and bolstered by a report showing strong economic growth in China, the world's second biggest consumer of energy.
Copper prices eased for the first time this week as fluctuating equity markets curbed investor optimism that metal demand will increase.

Stocks surged Wednesday for the second time in three days, propelling all the major indexes up about 3 percent and the Dow Jones industrials up 257 points for their biggest one-day gain in nearly four months. An upbeat forecast from Intel Corp. and the Federal Reserve's more positive take on the economy built on momentum that began Monday when an analyst issued an optimistic forecast for Goldman Sachs Group Inc.
Meanwhile, the day's economic data were more reassuring than some of the numbers the market had seen recently. The Federal Reserve said industrial companies cut production far less in June than they had in previous months, with output at the nation's factories, mines and utilities slipping just 0.4 percent last month after sliding 1.2 percent in May.
Nine stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 5.5 billion shares, compared with 4.2 billion Tuesday.
Oil rose more than 4% toward $62 a barrel Wednesday, supported by falling U.S. crude oil inventories and economic optimism following positive U.S. data.
Copper prices jumped the most in five weeks as signs of stability in U.S. manufacturing bolstered prospects for the metal used in pipes and wiring.
Gold jumped the most in more than two months as the US dollar slumped and oil rallied, boosting demand for alternative assets to hedge against inflation. Silver also rose.

Stocks eke out gains following better results from Goldman and Johnson & Johnson, mixed economic data
Mixed economic data Tuesday reminded investors of the challenges businesses still face and left the market zigzagging all day. Stocks gained on a handful of strong earnings, while Treasurys tumbled on news of a jump in inflation - a separate report showed wholesale prices rising far more than expected last month.
More than two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to a relatively low 4.2 billion shares, down from 4.6 billion Monday.
Oil slipped 17 cents to settle at $59.52 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Copper prices jumped to the highest in more than a week on speculation that an improving Chinese economy will boost prospects for increased metal demand.

Soaring financial shares propelled indexes to their biggest one-day gain in six weeks Monday after influential banking analyst Meredith Whitney raised her rating on Goldman Sachs. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 185 points in relatively thin trading volume.
Five stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 4.6 billion shares compared with 3.8 billion Friday.
However in a sign the financial crisis is not yet over, CIT Group Inc., the No. 1 lender to small and mid-sized U.S. businesses, is holding advanced talks with the government about receiving emergency federal assistance, officials said Monday. The company's stock fell toward $1 Monday as investors fearing a bankruptcy court filing unloaded the shares. A collapse of CIT, whose 1 million clients include big names from the franchisees of Dunkin' Donuts to retailer Dillard's Inc., could deal a devastating blow to the economy by cutting off financing just as businesses need it most, analysts warned.
Copper prices rose in New York as equity markets rallied, boosting investor sentiment for some industrial metals.
Gold prices climbed as the weakening US dollar raised demand for alternative assets. Silver also gained, after touching a 10-week low, and platinum advanced.
