Stocks on Friday hit their longest losing streak since the market's spring rally began in early March.
Unrelenting worries over the economy, driven by poor reports on unemployment, consumer confidence and falling commodity prices, have kept investors largely out of stocks since mid-June.
General Motors completed an unusually quick exit from bankruptcy protection on Friday with ambitions of making money and building cars people are eager to buy.
Declining stocks narrowly outpaced those that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to a relatively low 3.8 billion shares compared with 4.3 billion shares Thursday.
The market did get one piece of decent news on the economic front Friday as the Commerce Department said the U.S. trade deficit narrowed to $26 billion in May, the lowest level in more than nine years.
For the week, the Dow lost 1.6 percent, the S&P 500 index slid 1.9 percent and the Nasdaq lost 2.3 percent.
Oil prices dropped below $60 a barrel Friday as economic concerns sent investors seeking safer havens.
Copper may decline on speculation that demand won’t rebound any time soon, a survey showed. Fourteen of 18 analysts, investors and traders surveyed by Bloomberg, or 78 percent, said copper would fall next week.
Gold fell as a stronger US dollar and lower oil prices curbed the metal's appeal as an alternative investment and inflation hedge. Silver also eased.

Stocks edged higher Thursday, with all the major indexes rising in the single digits. Investors encouraged by better-than-expected results from aluminum maker Alcoa Inc. put money into stocks they recently avoided: commodities producers, banks and industrial companies.
The gains were tempered by weak sales reports from retailers and evidence that the labor market is still hurting.
The Labor Department said the number of initial jobless benefits claims fell last week to 565,000 -- the lowest level since early January and better than what analysts were expecting. However some of the improvement was due to changes in the timing of auto industry layoffs and the holiday-shortened week, and the number of continuing claims unexpectedly jumped to a new high.
About three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 4.3 billion shares, compared with 5.9 billion Wednesday.

Stocks finished mostly lower after zigzagging for much of the day Wednesday. A mixed outlook on the economy from the International Monetary Fund and falling commodity prices added to the downbeat mood.
The IMF said Wednesday it expects the world economy to shrink by 1.4 percent in 2009, slightly worse than its earlier estimate of 1.3 percent. But it boosted its estimate for global economic growth in 2010 to 2.5 percent, up from its April projection of 1.9 percent.
About two stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.4 billion shares compared with 1.1 billion Tuesday.
That tone could improve Thursday thanks to a narrower-than-expected loss from Alcoa Inc., which ushered in the second quarter earnings season after the closing bell Wednesday. The aluminum producer's shares rose 6 percent in after-hours trading.
Oil dropped more than 4% near $60 a barrel Wednesday after a U.S. government report showed that distillate stocks have risen near a 25-year high, reinforcing worries about a potential economic rebound.
Copper prices settled down on Wednesday, extending a correction to fresh two-week lows, as expectations of a poor economic outlook and slowing demand growth prospects prompted an across-the-board commodities sell-off.
Gold fell to a two-month low as the US dollar climbed, curbing demand for bullion as an alternative investment. Silver prices also dropped.

Major stock indexes skidded 2 percent Tuesday as crude fell for the fifth straight day and the Dow Jones industrial average fell 161 points to its lowest close since late April.
Oil tumbled from an eight-month high hit last week on concerns that a weak economy will dampen demand for energy.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by more than three to one on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 4.6 billion shares and was essentially flat with Monday.
Trading volume remained light amid a dearth of news about the economy this week and as investors await the beginning of the second-quarter earnings season, which starts Wednesday with Alcoa Inc. but won't pick up speed until next week.
Copper prices fell for the third straight session in New York on concern that demand will slide in China, the world’s biggest metal user.

Stocks ended mostly lower Monday as drops in prices for oil and other commodities had investors worrying again that demand for basic materials may remain slack. The major market indexes closed mixed but off of their lows for the day.
The drop in oil to a five-week low pushed energy and commodities stocks lower and sent investors into safe-haven parts of the market, like consumer goods producers. Oil fell more than 4% to $64 a barrel Monday as doubts over a potential rebound in the global economy spurred investor risk aversion.
Three stocks fell for every two that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to a light 4.63 billion shares, compared with 3.56 billion traded Thursday.
Gold fell to the lowest in almost two weeks as the dollar climbed and oil slid, reducing demand for the metal as an alternative investment and an inflation hedge. Silver also dropped.

Share Purchase Plan
Nagambie Mining (ASX Code: NAG) announces that it will be inviting eligible shareholders registered as at 7.00pm (AEST) on 8 July to participate in the Nagambie Mining Limited 2009 Share Purchase Plan ("SPP").
The SPP will enable eligible Nagambie Mining shareholders to purchase between $1,000 and $15,000 worth of shares at a price of 3.2 cents per share without being required to pay brokerage fees or incurring additional transaction costs. This price represents an 11.6% discount to the volume-weighted average price for Nagambie Mining shares on the ASX over the previous 10 days in which Nagambie Mining shares have traded of 3.62 cents.
The SPP will be capped at a maximum of $500,000 and shares will be allocated on a "firstin, first-served" basis.
Nagambie Mining has compelling opportunities to build significant gold resources in central Victoria and to generate substantial income from the sale of stockpiled rock from the Nagambie Mine. A modest increase in working capital is now required to ensure the Company has sufficient funding to fully capitalise on these opportunities.
All the directors of Nagambie Mining intend to take up their maximum entitlement for shares under the SPP with respect to their own shareholdings.- Web Site
