With little to point them in either direction, stocks zigzagged in a tight range Friday as commodity and technology stocks gave up some of their recent gains.
Advancing stocks narrowly outpaced those that fell Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a light 858 million shares, compared with 1.2 billion Thursday.
For the week, the Dow edged up 0.4 percent. It was the fourth straight weekly gain for the blue chips and the 12th of the last 14.
The S&P 500 index rose 0.7 percent for the week and the Nasdaq added 0.5 percent. The indexes are all positive for the year.
Oil eased toward $72 a barrel Friday, a day after reaching a near eight-month high, pressured by a firmer US dollar and views that prices have risen too far despite improving economic sentiment.
Copper fell on Friday as a stronger U.S. dollar dented sentiment, bringing prices back from this week's eight-month highs, but analysts expected to see further gains because of brighter economic prospects.
U.S. gold futures broke below $940 an ounce on Friday, finishing 2 percent lower on a strong US dollar rally, which prompted funds to switch money out of the commodities sector and into other investments.

Stocks fell moderately Wednesday after the government sold $19 billion in 10-year Treasury notes in a relatively weak auction. There were plenty of bidders, but the government had to lure them in with a higher yield than the market had anticipated.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose for the fourth time in five days, jumping to 3.95 percent from 3.86 percent late Tuesday. That helped send stocks broadly lower, with the Dow Jones industrial average losing 24 points.
About three stocks fell for every two that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.2 billion shares compared with 1.1 billion Tuesday.
Crude oil rose to a seven-month high and gasoline futures climbed above $2 a gallon for the first time since October after a government report showed that U.S. crude and fuel supplies unexpectedly fell.
Gold settled unchanged in New York, erasing earlier gains, as a rebounding US dollar curbed demand for the precious metal as an alternative investment.

Stocks fell moderately Wednesday after the government sold $19 billion in 10-year Treasury notes in a relatively weak auction. There were plenty of bidders, but the government had to lure them in with a higher yield than the market had anticipated.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose for the fourth time in five days, jumping to 3.95 percent from 3.86 percent late Tuesday. That helped send stocks broadly lower, with the Dow Jones industrial average losing 24 points.
About three stocks fell for every two that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.2 billion shares compared with 1.1 billion Tuesday.
Crude oil rose to a seven-month high and gasoline futures climbed above $2 a gallon for the first time since October after a government report showed that U.S. crude and fuel supplies unexpectedly fell.
Gold settled unchanged in New York, erasing earlier gains, as a rebounding US dollar curbed demand for the precious metal as an alternative investment.

Stocks ended a quiet day mostly higher Tuesday as traders bought commodities and technology stocks.
The rise in commodities reflects hopes that economic activity will improve and boost the appetite for basic materials. A falling US dollar also helped push commodity prices higher, and oil settled above $70 a barrel for the first time this year.
About three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume slipped to 4.3 billion shares from 4.4 billion Monday.
Robust demand at a government bond auction of three-year notes reassured investors who have worried in recent weeks that rising interest rates would choke off a recovery by making it more expensive for consumers to get loans.

U.S. stocks rebounded late on Monday to end flat, shrugging off lighter-than-expected sales from McDonald's and lowered iPhone prices from Apple.
After the closing bell, shares of Texas Instruments Inc jumped 5.2 percent to $20.80 after the chip supplier raised its earnings per share and revenue outlook for the second-quarter.
Trading volume was low on the New York Stock Exchange, with about 1.08 billion shares changing hands, well below last year's estimated daily average of 1.49 billion, while on Nasdaq, about 2.00 billion shares traded, below last year's daily average of 2.28 billion.
Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by 1,890 to 1,106 while on the Nasdaq, decliners beat advancers by 1,657 to 1,026.
Shanghai copper fell nearly 2 percent on Monday, on a stronger dollar and investor worries about a supply overhang as China enters the low season for copper consumption.
Gold slid to the lowest in almost two weeks as the US dollar gained, reducing the appeal of precious metals as an alternative investment. Silver also declined.
