Investors set aside some of their worries about banks and the economy Friday after the government unveiled its methods for testing the health of banks.
The Federal Reserve report was light on details, but didn't bring any bad news. Investors were also pleased about quarterly results from Ford Motor Co., American Express Co. and Microsoft Corp.
The Fed, in outlining the tests' methodology, said the 19 companies that hold one-half of the loans in the U.S. banking system won't be allowed to fail -- even if they fared poorly on the stress tests.
Those developments cleared the way for a 119-point gain in the Dow Jones industrial average, leaving it down slightly for the week. The Dow and the S&P 500 broke their six-week winning streak, but the Nasdaq extended its string of weekly gains to seven.
About three stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 6.99 billion shares, up from 6.47 billion shares Thursday.
For the week, the Dow slipped 0.7 percent, the S&P 500 dipped 0.4 percent, and the Nasdaq rose 1.3 percent.
The US dollar was mostly lower against other major currencies, while gold prices rose. Light, sweet crude jumped $1.93 to $51.55 a barrel even as supplies remain plentiful.
China revealed on Friday that it had secretly raised its gold reserves by three-quarters since 2003, increasing its holdings to 1,054 tonnes - and confirming years of speculation it had been buying.

U.S. stocks rose in volatile trade on Thursday as better-than-expected results from several regional banks lifted financial shares, overshadowing disappointing economic data and anemic outlooks from economic bellwethers like United Parcel Service.
Trading was moderate on the New York Stock Exchange, with about 1.57 billion shares changing hands, slightly above last year's estimated daily average of 1.49 billion, while on Nasdaq, about 2.46 billion shares traded, above last year's daily average of 2.28 billion.
Advancing stocks outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a ratio of about 3 to 2, while the trend was the reverse on the Nasdaq, where about eight stocks fell for every five that rose.
Oil prices rose slightly Wednesday as the stock market posted modest gains, despite a government report that showed crude supplies increased more than expected.
Gold prices closed above $900 for the first time in three weeks on Thursday as investors moved some money back into the safe-haven investment while stocks wavered on Wall Street.

A late-session drop in banks left Wall Street's major benchmarks mixed. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 83 points, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index ended modestly higher ahead of a quarterly report from eBay Inc.
EBay Inc. rose 49 cents, or 3.4 percent, to $14.78 ahead of its report, and then climbed another 8.6 percent in after-hours trading. The Internet auction company's earnings and revenue fell for the second quarter in a row due to the slumping economy, but they surpassed analysts' expectations.
Apple Inc. slipped 25 cents to close at $121.51 but rose 2.6 percent in after-hours trading after reporting a better-than-expected 15 percent rise in profit.
Rising stocks outpaced those that fell by about 8 to 7 on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 7.15 billion shares, down slightly from 7.22 billion shares Tuesday.
Oil prices rose slightly Wednesday as the stock market posted modest gains, despite a government report that showed crude supplies increased more than expected.
Copper prices fell, capping the steepest three-day decline since January, on speculation that the recession will deepen and cut raw-materials demand.
The International Monetary Fund said the global economy will contract this year and the recovery will be slower than estimated earlier.

Quarterly Activities Report
HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE QUARTER
Beaconsfield Gold CEO, Bill Colvin said "The Beaconsfield Mine generated a healthy operational cashflow of over $9 million during the quarter, delivering improved production into a strong gold price. This enabled debt to be retired and the balance sheet to be strengthened, as well as funding accelerated capital development and exploration. The Beaconsfield Mine continued to perform safely at an annualised production rate of around 75,000 ounces. With the footwall drive infrastructure now largely in place, capital development of the mine accelerated and we now expect to access our next major production area, the F21 Zone, during the June quarter. Once the footwall drives are completed in the June quarter, cash operating costs will reduce significantly. We have set ourselves a target of doubling the current mine life from the Tasmania Reef extension drilling program. The drilling continued to plan throughout the quarter and it was particularly pleasing to note that the deepest intersection achieved to date in the Tasmania Reef provided a high grade result of 1.6 metres at 32.7 g/t gold." |

Banks pull market from slump after Geithner says 'vast majority' of them have enough capital
Geithner's assertion that "the vast majority" of banks have enough capital pulled stocks from a slump that began with a sell-off Monday and spilled over into Tuesday morning.
The jump in most banks overshadowed mixed results from big-name companies. Coca-Cola Co. and drugmaker Merck & Co. posted results or issued forecasts that fell short of what the market expected.
About four stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.7 billion shares.
Oil prices rose Tuesday, recovering from earlier losses on its expiration day, as stock prices headed higher.
Copper futures dropped Tuesday for a second session, as gloomy earnings reports from Caterpillar Inc. and other Dow industrials components fueled economic fears, reducing demand for the critical industrial metal.

Long-present unease about soured loans bubbled over on Monday after Bank of America Corp. said it set aside $13.4 billion to cover lending losses, even as it posted a profit for the first quarter, and as anxiety grew about the results of the government's "stress tests" to determine if banks will need more government bailout money. Nervousness is growing now over the massive losses from defaulting loans that are yet to come.
Financial stocks suffered some of the day's worst declines: Bank of America plunged 24.3 percent and Citigroup fell 19 percent. Those two components of the Dow Jones industrial average contributed to a daily loss in the index of 290 points, or 3.6 percent.
Energy and materials companies also fell along with the prices of key commodities they rely on, such as crude oil.
About 10 stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 6.79 billion shares, down from 7.1 billion shares on Friday.
The price of oil fell sharply Monday as the US dollar advanced and investors remained concerned about weak demand and rising inventories. Crude prices tumbled $4.45, or almost 9%, to settle at $45.88 a barrel Monday.
