Wall Street edges higher as Citigroup and GE beat earnings forecasts
Citigroup was the fourth bank in a week with news that pointed toward a budding recovery in the industry. But the company, echoing comments from JPMorgan Chase & Co. on Thursday, also said loan losses are expected to continue in the months ahead.
Citigroup reported a quarterly loss of just under $1 billion, less than analysts expected.
GE, meanwhile, said its first-quarter earnings dropped 36 percent as sales and profits shrank at its GE Capital financial division.
About two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 7.1 billion shares, compared with 6.43 billion Thursday.
For the week, the Dow is up 48 points, or 0.6 percent, giving the average six straight up weeks. That's the longest streak since it rose for seven straight weeks in the period ended May 18, 2007.
Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson posted a $387 million loss and said it would cut an additional 2,000 jobs, while Toshiba Corp., Japan's top chipmaker, warned that its loss for the last fiscal year will be bigger than expected.
The S&P 500 index posted a gain for the week of 1.5 percent. The Nasdaq is up 1.2 percent for the week and 6 percent for the year.
Oil prices edged past $50 a barrel Friday on news of a rebound in U.S. consumer confidence and better-than-expected quarterly earnings. However, a nearly 19-year high in crude oil inventories, a stronger US dollar and continuing worries about the economic outlook kept a cap on prices.
Copper rose, capping a fifth straight weekly gain and the longest rally in a year, as a rebound in equity markets revived prospects for economic growth and metal demand.
Gold fell, capping the fourth straight weekly loss, on speculation that a central bank or the International Monetary Fund may sell some bullion holdings - there was market talk that India and China might press for the sale of the entire 3,217 tonnes of IMF gold reserves.

The Australian share market has closed flat, amid gains by the big miners and retailers but a weaker energy and gold sector.
Australia's export price index tumbled 4.6% in the first quarter ended March 31, from levels in the last quarter of 2008. It was the first drop in the export price index since the last quarter of 2007, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said today.
Import prices also fell in the same period, but at a more sedate pace of 2.8%, the ABS said.

Stocks closed at their highest level in more than two months Thursday following a mix of earnings and economic reports that indicate the pace of the economy's slide is slowing.
The day's economic numbers also fed investors' optimism. The government's weekly unemployment claims fell more than expected for the second straight week and a snapshot of regional manufacturing from the Philadelphia Federal Reserve was better than expected. Home construction fell sharply last month, but analysts said that could help the real estate market work through an oversupply of homes.
However a bankruptcy filing by the nation's second-largest mall operator, General Growth Properties Inc., brought another reminder of the economy's lingering troubles and the dearth of available credit.
Four stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.6 billion shares compared with 1.5 billion shares traded Wednesday.
Oil edged higher towards $50 a barrel Thursday but gains were limited as mixed data from the United States and China reminded investors that any signs of economic recovery were still tentative.
Gold and silver fell to the lowest prices in a week on speculation that the pace of inflation will be slower than investors expected, eroding demand for the precious metals as a store of value.

Hints of stabilizing economy spark late rally
Late rally lifts market; consumer, financials stocks gain but Intel presses Nasdaq
Early caution gave way to a rally in the last hour of trading as investors looked for stocks that could benefit from a rebound in the economy. Technology stocks lagged after Intel Corp.'s tightlipped forecast caused jitters about a corner of the market that had drawn buyers over the past month.
More than two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a light 1.5 billion shares.
Copper rose the most in more than a week as declines in inventories signaled demand is rising for the metal used in pipes and wires.
Zinc advanced for a fourth day to the highest level in six months on speculation demand is increasing in China, the world’s largest producer and consumer of the metal used to galvanize steel.
Platinum rose for the fifth time in six sessions as slumping global equity markets renewed speculation that investors will boost purchases of the metal as a hedge. Palladium also advanced.

Weak retail sales report halts stock market rally
Wall Street shifted into reverse Tuesday after a surprisingly weak retail sales report (1.1% slump in retail sales in March) punctured the market's optimism about the economy.
The poor sales data, combined with a sharp drop in wholesale prices, overshadowed better-than-expected earnings reports from Johnson & Johnson and Goldman Sachs, leading the Dow Jones industrial average down 1.7% to 7,920.18.
Financial stocks were especially weak after Goldman said it would raise $5 billion to repay government bailout money.
Two stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.8 billion shares.
Copper fell from a five-month high after a report showed U.S. retail sales declined in March, renewing concern that the recession is eroding metal demand.

Stocks ended relatively unchanged Monday ahead of a flurry of earnings reports that could determine whether the economy is really getting better, as investors have been hoping over the past month as they plunged money back into the market. Early signs were promising. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. surprised investors after the end of trading Monday when it released better-than-expected quarterly results and announced a $5 billion stock offering.
About three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 6.3 billion shares compared with 7.3 billion shares traded Thursday.
Oil fell to settle near $50 a barrel Monday as the stock market slipped, after the International Energy Agency cut its forecast for oil demand.
Copper climbed to its highest level in six months in New York futures trade Monday morning, as falling inventory levels and signs of economic recovery in China, the world's largest copper consumer, suggested a brighter demand outlook.
Gold futures finished above $890 an ounce Monday, as concerns about bank earnings and a possible bankruptcy for General Motors Corp. led some investors back to the precious metal following its third-straight weekly loss.
