Stocks surged Thursday to their highest levels in two months after banking giant Wells Fargo & Co. surprised the market with an early profit report that blew past analysts' expectations thanks to a strong pickup in its lending business.
About seven stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume came to 1.8 billion shares.
For the week, the Dow rose 0.8 percent, the S&P 500 rose 1.7 percent, while the Nasdaq added 1.9 percent.
Oil prices followed the stock market higher Thursday sending oil prices up $2.86, or 5.8%, to settle at $52.24.
Copper prices surged on Thursday to their highest levels since late October, driven by a sharp rally in global equities and inventory data showing more metal may be making its way to China.
However, LME stocks of aluminum rose to a record above 3.55 million tonnes, a gain of more than 50 per cent since January.
Gold futures fell Thursday ahead of the three-day holiday weekend, marking a third weekly loss as upbeat results from Wells Fargo & Co. boosted investor interest in stocks, reducing gold's appeal as a safe asset.

The ASX closed almost 1.5% higher after gains from the big miners, financials and energy stocks offset the largest monthly jump in unemployment since the 1991 recession.
Australia's unemployment rate was a seasonally adjusted 5.7% in March (full time employment dropped by a seasonally adjusted 34,700) compared with an unrevised 5.2% in February, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Insurance and technology shares led the market slightly higher in a volatile day Wednesday, breaking a two-day slide. But a dim view of the economy from the Federal Reserve and jitters over looming earnings reports kept buyers in check.
Insurers jumped following a report in The Wall Street Journal that the government may soon provide rescue funds to the ailing life insurance industry.
Technology stocks showed some of the biggest advances following an encouraging forecast from Juniper Networks Inc. The maker of equipment for computer networks said its first-quarter earnings should meet forecasts even as sales will likely fall short of expectations.
About three stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange where volume came to a light 1.32 billion shares.
Crude oil rose for the first time in four sessions after a U.S. government report showed a smaller inventory gain than an industry report.
Gold rose for a second straight day in New York as some investors purchased the metal to hedge against financial turmoil. Silver also gained.

Major market barometers all fell more than 2 percent, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which lost 186 points. Analysts attributed the pullback to profit-taking after a huge advance in March and on persistent concerns about the health of financial institutions.
Trading volume was low - about three stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a light 1.26 billion shares.
Crude oil fell for a third day on speculation that a report tomorrow will show U.S. supplies increased as the recession curbed fuel demand.

Wall Street pulled back for the first time in five days Monday as investors worried about balance sheets at banks and the quarterly results that businesses will start releasing this week.
Financial shares sold off after a prominent analyst predicted more losses at banks and said the government's efforts to prop up the ailing industry might not be as effective as hoped.
Investors were also disappointed that talks for IBM Corp.'s $7 billion deal to buy Sun Microsystems Inc. have stalled -- a sign that the market is still not ready to support big mergers. Sun shares plunged more than 22 percent, falling $1.93 to $6.56.
More than two stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a light 1.3 billion shares.
Oil prices ended lower Monday as concern about bank loan write-offs pushed the stock markets lower.
Copper fell from a five-month high as declining equity markets spurred concern that a recent rally may have been overdone, given the slumping global economy.
Gold fell to the lowest price in more than two months, erasing this year's gains, on speculation that the U.S. economy will rebound, eroding the precious metal's appeal as a haven. Silver dropped the most in two weeks.
