Not even grisly job losses could get in the stock market's way Friday.
According to preliminary calculations, the Dow climbed 39.51, or 0.5 percent, to 8,017.59. That is the index's highest close since Feb. 9. About two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.5 billion shares.
The Labor Department's March unemployment report was a big hurdle for the market. The numbers were certainly grim - employers slashed a net total of 663,000 jobs last month, only slightly worse than the 654,000 economists expected. The employment rate jumped to 8.5 percent, its highest level since late 1983, when the economy was starting to emerge from a deep recession.
Oil prices ended slightly lower on Friday after the government reported a spike in the unemployment rate.
Gold prices fell yesterday on reports that the G20 has asked the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to bring forward sales (403 tons) from its gold reserves, raising funds to help the world's poorest countries.

Stocks rose across the board in heavy trading following an accounting rule change that will help banks pare their losses and after commitments from world leaders to toughen regulatory oversight of financial institutions. Banking shares got a significant boost after a rulemaking body for the accounting industry relaxed financial reporting rules that force banks to value their assets at current market prices.
The Dow broke through 8,000 for the first time since Feb. 9 but ended slightly below that level ahead of the government's employment report Friday that could easily upset the market if it comes in below forecasts -- or send prices rocketing higher if it's better than expected.
For every three stocks that fell, nearly nine stocks rose on the New York Stock Exchange where volume came to 1.87 billion shares.
Overseas markets also logged big gains. Japan's Nikkei stock average rose 4.4 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index jumped 7.4 percent. In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 rose 4.3 percent, Germany's DAX index rose 6.1 percent, and France's CAC-40 rose 5.4 percent.
Oil prices jumped back above $52 a barrel, in tandem with a rally in equities Thursday, as signs of an economic recovery seem to appear on the horizon.
Gold fell the most in more than a week on speculation that the world economy will improve, eroding the appeal of the precious metal as a haven.

Wall Street opened the second quarter with solid gains, extending a four-week rally that brought the market off its lowest levels in 12 years.
After falling in the early going Wednesday on disappointing jobs data, the Dow Jones industrials closed up 153 points on economic data that showed a rebound in pending home sales and improving manufacturing activity. Major indexes all rose at least 1.5 percent.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by more than 3 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.9 billion shares, essentially flat with Tuesday.
Oil prices dipped below $48 a barrel Wednesday after a government report showed a build in unused crude supplies.

Wall Street rebounds on last day of the quarter
Wall Street ended a tumultuous March on a high note, managing its first winning month this year and its best monthly performance in nearly seven years.
Stocks finished off their earlier highs on Tuesday but resumed a three-week rally that has brought the Dow Jones industrials up a total of 16 percent since hitting their lowest level in 12 years on March 9.
Investors looked past a number of economic reports, including the S&P Case-Shiller index of 20 cities, which showed that U.S. home prices declined by a record 19 percent in January from a year ago. Separately, a measure of consumer confidence inched up in March after plummeting to historic lows in February.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by more than 3 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.64 billion shares.
The Dow rose 7.7 percent overall in March, its biggest monthly gain since October 2002.
Oil prices ended the session higher on Tuesday, just shy of the $50 a barrel threshold, as a Wall Street rally picked up steam late in the trading day.
Copper prices rose, capping the biggest quarterly gain since 2006, as a weaker US dollar spurred demand from investors who buy commodities as an inflation hedge.

Stocks tumble as automaker plans are rejected
Wall Street's March rally is on hold after the White House rejected turnaround plans from General Motors Corp. and Chrysler and gave investors an economic reality check. Financial stocks also weighed heavily on the market amid worries that banks will need fresh injections of capital.
President Barack Obama refused further long-term federal bailouts for GM and Chrysler, saying the companies needed to get more concessions from unions, creditors and others before the money could be approved. He also raised the possibility of controlled bankruptcy for one or both of the companies.
About seven stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.8 billion shares, up from 5.48 billion on Friday.
Oil fell below US$49 a barrel on Monday after the U.S. government rejected restructuring plans from embattled automakers GM and Chrysler.
Copper prices fell by the most in almost six weeks after the government said U.S. banks and carmakers may need more taxpayer help, renewing concern that the global economic slump will slash demand for raw materials.
Gold prices dipped Monday, as the US dollar rallied against European currencies amid fresh signs of global economic troubles.

Wall Street got the news it wanted on the economy's biggest problems -- banks and housing -- and celebrated by hurtling the Dow Jones industrials up nearly 500 points.
Investors added rocket fuel Monday to a two-week-old advance, cheering the government's plan to help banks remove bad assets from their books and also welcoming a report showing a surprising increase in home sales. Major stock indicators surged about 7 percent, including the Dow, which had its biggest percentage gain since October.
The Treasury Department said its bad asset cleanup program would tap money from the government's $700 billion financial rescue fund and involve help from the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and the participation of private investors.
More than 10 stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to nearly 7.5 billion shares, about even with Friday's pace.
A surprising leap in existing home sales in February was a welcome if tentative sign of hope that the real estate market may be stabilizing. Prices plunged by almost 16 percent from a year ago in February and are expected to keep falling well into 2009.
Oil prices rose Monday to a nearly 4-month high after Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner unveiled the details of a government plan to buy up banks' bad assets.
