Caution reasserted itself on Wall Street, sending stocks down sharply but not enough to stop the market from notching its third straight weekly advance.
Major indexes fell about 2 percent Friday, but most analysts agreed the pullback was a natural response to the market's powerful climb this month. Financial and technology stocks led the retreat, and energy shares fell along with the price of oil.
A dip in personal incomes and a slowdown in personal spending gave investors reason to cash in some of their winnings after the Dow Jones industrial average surged 21 percent over just 13 days.
For every advancing stock there were about three that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Consolidated volume came to 5.48 billion shares, compared with 6.84 on Thursday.
For the week, the Dow is up more than 6.8 percent. The S&P 500 is up 6.2 percent and the Nasdaq is up 6 percent.
Oil fell nearly $2 Friday as weaker stock markets, soft economic data and evidence of OPEC overproduction encouraged profit-taking after several days of gains.
Copper ended down on Friday, backing away from a near five-month peak, as a general commodity downturn and uncertainties about the strength of real demand from manufacturers, particularly in China, weighed on values.

Minmetals Offer Update - Information from the Treasurer
The Treasurer of Australia has today released the following statement.
“Today I advise of progress in my consideration of the takeover proposal by China Minmetals Non-Ferrous Metals Co Ltd for 100 per cent of OZ Minerals Ltd. Under the Foreign Acquisitions and Takeovers Act 1975, all foreign investment applications are examined against Australia's national interest.
An important part of this assessment is whether proposals conform with Australia's national security interests, in line with the principles that apply to foreign government related investments.
OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill mining operations are situated in the Woomera Prohibited Area in South Australia. The Woomera Prohibited Area weapons testing range makes a unique and sensitive contribution to Australia's national defence. It is not unusual for governments to restrict access to sensitive areas on national security grounds.
The Government has determined that Minmetals' proposal for OZ Minerals cannot be approved if it includes Prominent Hill. I have informed Minmetals of this decision. Discussions between the Foreign Investment Review Board and Minmetals are continuing in relation to OZ Minerals' other businesses and assets, and the Government is willing to consider alternative proposals relating to those other assets and businesses.
The Government issued an interim order on this application on 23 March 2009.
Commenting on the statement, OZ Minerals Limited Managing Director and CEO, Andrew Michelmore said, “OZ Minerals is now in discussion with Minmetals regarding possible changes to the proposed transaction structure in light of the Treasurer’s statement and will make a further announcement in this regard as soon as possible.”
OZ Minerals remains in constructive negotiations with its banks regarding the pending extension of certain of its loan facilities due on 31 March 2009. - Web Site

Dow hits 6-week high on relief over earnings
Better-than-expected earnings from big consumer brands Best Buy, ConAgra Foods Inc. and Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. sent the Dow Jones industrial average up 174 points Thursday to its highest level in six weeks. It has surged 21 percent since hitting a nearly 12-year low on March 9. And the technology-dominated Nasdaq composite index is now up 0.63 percent for 2009.
Strong demand for government debt at the Treasury Department's latest auction also lifted stocks.
About four stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.8 billion shares.
Meanwhile, government data indicated that the economy is still in decline, but at a less devastating pace than feared.
The number of workers seeking unemployment benefits rose to a seasonally adjusted 652,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 644,000, the Labor Department said.
The Commerce Department said the nation's gross domestic product shrank at a 6.3 percent pace in the fourth quarter.
Oil prices hit a new high for the year Thursday and retail gasoline rose above $2 per gallon for the first time since November as investors wagered that there would be a new run on crude stocks.

Stocks manage moderate gain after erratic session
The Dow Jones industrials rose as much as 203 points in response to upbeat economic data, then fell nearly 110 during the afternoon before closing up 90. Some analysts said the late surge -- which lifted the Dow nearly 178 points, or 2.35 percent in the last hour -- was due in part to short covering.
Weak demand during an auction of government debt stirred up worries about how easily Washington will be able to raise money to fund its economic rescue program.
Two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 7.53 billion shares, up from Tuesday's 6.65 billion.
Oil prices remained lower but recovered some losses Wednesday after positive economic data and the Treasury Department's bad-bank plan outweighed a mixed inventory report.
Copper prices declined for a second day in New York on concern demand will slump for the metal used in pipes and wires.

Wall Street gives up some ground after huge gains yesterday.
The bulk of Tuesday's market retreat was in financial stocks -- the companies that have been rising the most recently.
About two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 6.65 billion shares, down from Monday's 7.5 billion.
Crude oil continued to rise to its highest level in four months on speculation that a government report will show that U.S. supplies of gasoline and distillate fuel declined.
Copper dropped from the highest price in four months as the US dollar's rebound curbed demand for commodities as a hedge against inflation.
Gold fell the most in almost a week on speculation that a U.S. government plan to rid banks of toxic assets will revive lending and the economy, eroding the appeal of the precious metal. Silver also declined.

Wall Street got the news it wanted on the economy's biggest problems -- banks and housing -- and celebrated by hurtling the Dow Jones industrials up nearly 500 points.
Investors added rocket fuel Monday to a two-week-old advance, cheering the government's plan to help banks remove bad assets from their books and also welcoming a report showing a surprising increase in home sales. Major stock indicators surged about 7 percent, including the Dow, which had its biggest percentage gain since October.
The Treasury Department said its bad asset cleanup program would tap money from the government's $700 billion financial rescue fund and involve help from the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and the participation of private investors.
More than 10 stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to nearly 7.5 billion shares, about even with Friday's pace.
A surprising leap in existing home sales in February was a welcome if tentative sign of hope that the real estate market may be stabilizing. Prices plunged by almost 16 percent from a year ago in February and are expected to keep falling well into 2009.
Oil prices rose Monday to a nearly 4-month high after Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner unveiled the details of a government plan to buy up banks' bad assets.
