Wall Street capped a week of huge fluctuations and gains with a sizable advance Friday after investors set aside some anxiety over news that the economy lost jobs last month and focused on Microsoft Corp.'s US$44.6 billion bid for Internet company Yahoo Inc. and a possible rescue plan for the troubled bond insurance sector.
Google Inc. fell $48.40, or 8.6 percent, to $515.90 after reporting its fourth-quarter earnings and revenue growth slowed at a faster pace than Wall Street expected.
The US economy lost 17,000 jobs in January, marking the first contraction of the labor market in more than four years (economists were expecting 70,000 new jobs). In addition construction spending dropped 1.1 percent in December -- the most in 15 months and twice what analysts expected.
However, stocks did get some strength from a report showing a pickup in the nation's manufacturing sector in January. The Institute for Supply Management, a business group, said its index of manufacturing activity rose to a reading of 50.7 from 48.4 in December.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by more than 3 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.79 billion shares compared with 2.19 billion shares traded Thursday.
Light, sweet crude oil fell $2.74 to $89.01 on the New York Mercantile Exchange after the employment report raised concerns that the U.S. economy will slow and hurt demand for oil.
Copper dropped after the U.S. unexpectedly lost jobs in January, renewing concern demand will fall in the world's largest economy.
Gold futures fell the most two weeks as the dollar rebounded against the euro; silver dropped from the highest level since 1980.

Review of operations
The net profit after tax for the consolidated entity for the year ended 31 December 2007 was $76.1 million (2006: $43.6 million). Earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) were $108.0 million (2006: $68.7 million).
Revenue from ordinary activities for the year was $362.4 million (2006: $317.2 million). Sales of uranium for the year were 5,324 tonnes (2006: 5,760). ERA met all delivery commitments by the end of 2007 and force majeure, declared after the February/March weather event, has now been lifted. ERA had no short term uranium loans outstanding at the end of the year (2006: 316 tonnes).
ERA's contractual sale price is only partially influenced by the spot market due to its diversified sales contract portfolio. The average realised sale price of uranium oxide was US$25.06/lb (2006: US$18.36/lb). On 31 December 2007 the spot market price was US$89.50/lb (2006: US$72.00/lb).
ERA's effective A$:US$ exchange rate in 2007 negatively impacted revenue by approximately A$38.6 million when compared with ERA's effective 2006 exchange rate. The company settled US$40 million (2006: US$42 million) in forward exchange contracts during the year at an average A$:US$ exchange rate of 65 cents (2006: 65 cents) resulting in a gain of A$12.9 million (2006:A$8.4 million). No new currency exchange contracts were entered into during the year.
Improved operational performance and an increase in grade of ore mined resulted in annual production in 2007 of 5,412 tonnes, 14 per cent higher than 2006 (2006: 4,748 tonnes). The 2007 annual production is the second highest annual production on record for the Ranger mine.
While revenues rose as a consequence of the rise in the average realised price, this was partially offset by a rise in employee and contractor numbers and associated costs, and increased expenditure on key consumables, particularly sulphuric acid. ERA also incurred increased costs associated with the removal of water from the operational pit associated with the severe weather event in the first quarter of 2007. In addition, the costs associated with pre-feasibility into Ranger expansion options were expensed...... - Web Site

SUMMARY
Malachite has a lot on its plate this year but we are now well provided for in both financial and human resources and we look forward to a very productive year in 2008.
Conrad will continue to be our primary focus and we hope to have a new resource estimate available around mid year. At the same time, we will be solidly back into gold exploration at Tooloom and should have some further assay results in May or June. From April, after the wet season, we will again be a participant in exploration of the world class Mt Isa Copper Province. Meanwhile, we will endeavour to identify an economic tin deposit at Elsmore that could possibly generate some cash flow while the exploration and evaluation of the company-making discovery at Conrad continues....... - Web Site

Power Supply Interruptions in South Africa Affect Production
Aquarius Platinum Limited advises that mining operations at the company's Kroondal, Marikana and Everest Mines were affected by power outages due to load-shedding requirements demanded by Eskom, the national power utility. Following the suspension of milling operations on Friday 25 January 2008, a near normal supply of power returned late evening on Tuesday 29 January.
Eskom had informed (amongst others) platinum, gold and ferrochrome miners and producers that it was contractually unable to guarantee power supplies and therefore declared an emergency, stating in a letter to Aquarius Platinum (SA) (Pty) Limited that "performance has been severely impacted by, inter alia, the adverse weather conditions to the extent that our ability to supply is severely compromised". It is understood that the load shedding was due to unusually high rainfall which is limiting the supply of coal from the collieries.
Following intensive meetings with industry, Eskom yesterday agreed to provide 80% of normal power on Tuesday evening 29 January and 90% from Thursday 31 January. AQPSA has been asked and agreed to find ways to conserve the balance. The return of power will enable the recommencement of all the operations which had been suspended.
In addition, the Mimosa Mine in Zimbabwe has continued to operate normally following power interruptions in Zimbabwe last week.
Operations at the Everest Mine, however, will see a slow return to normal as AQPSA continues to recruit former employees of contractor Shaft Sinkers Mining (Pty) Ltd, after that company abandoned the underground mining contract on Thursday 24 January 2008.
It is not yet possible to forecast total production losses. - Web Site

UPDATE ON SOUTH AFRICAN POWER
Xstrata Alloys has been informed by South Africa's Eskom that 80% of normal power supply will be restored to its operations on 30 January 2008 and 90% of normal power supply will be restored by 1 February 2008. The restoration of the remaining 10% is entirely dependent on the success of a nationwide recovery plan presented to major industrial and local government users. Xstrata Alloys will work closely with Eskom to assist in the 10% national reduction in power supply.
Xstrata Coal South Africa is participating in a working group to alleviate any coal supply issues comprising Eskom, the Chamber of Mines and the Department of Minerals and Energy. The working group has agreed upon a process that will assist coal-fired power stations to maintain 20-day stockpiles of coal in anticipation of increased demand during the South African winter. Xstrata Coal will also cooperate with Eskom on its medium-term demand reduction strategy. - Web Site

Wall Street ended a frenetic January with a huge advance Thursday after investors set aside worries about bond insurers and grew more optimistic that the Federal Reserve's interest rate cuts will indeed help lift the economy. The Dow Jones industrials rose more than 200 points but suffered its worst January in eight years. For the month, the Dow lost 4.63 percent -- its worst January since losing 4.84 percent at the start of 2000.
Bond insurer MBIA Inc. calmed Wall Street Thursday when its chief executive, Gary Dunton, told investors he is confident the company can retain its crucial AAA credit rating and that MBIA will still be able to raise fresh capital.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by about 3 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume totaled 5.22 billion shares, compared with 4.64 billion shares seen Wednesday.
Copper rose, capping the biggest monthly gain since April, on speculation lower U.S. borrowing costs will bolster economic growth, spurring demand for the metal used in pipes and wires. Gold and silver also rose.

Quarterly Operations and Cashflow Report to 31 Dec 2007
Icon Energy Limited drilled and completed three (3) exploration wells in ATP 626P in the Surat Basin in Queensland. These wells penetrated the Jundah and Taroom coal beds along with thick sections of carbonaceous shales. The drilling programme has proven the existence of coal seams that have indicated prospective recoverable reserves of methane gas in the range of 0.9 to 1.25 trillion cubic feet. (i.e. max 1,250,000,000,000 cu ft)
Stitch No 1 was drilled to test two (2) targets. The upper target was gas in the Walloon Coal Measures where up to 78 units of gas were indicated in the Jundah and Taroom Coal sections. These high gas readings are indicative of gas saturation in the well. A flow is anticipated from the well when dewatering commences.
Natasha No 1 is located on a structurally high trend and intersected coal and carbonaceous material. It only drilled the Jundah coals and did not fully penetrate the lower coal section. The well has been bubbling gas along with a small water flow. The gas has been measured at 89% methane with ethane, propane, butane, isobutane and pentane present in small quantities. Carbon dioxide content was small. A full laboratory analysis of the gas content and water is currently being made at ACS laboratories in Brisbane.
It will take several months to determine the commerciality of the gas flows from all three (3) wells. Testing equipment has been ordered for the wells but it will take 6-8 weeks for this equipment to be delivered from Houston, Texas. With strong demand for CBM equipment in Australia, there is a shortage of stock availability.

Zeta Infill Drilling
Discovery Metals Limited (ASX: DML, BSE: DML, AIM:DME) has recently released the first batch of results from the infill drilling program on the Zeta Inferred Mineral Resource (27.1Mt @ 1.3% Cu) on the Maun Copper Project. This infill drilling program forms an important part of the Pre-Feasibility Study being conducted on the Zeta Resource. The infill drilling results received to date have exceeded the Company's expectations in terms of grade and width of the copper-silver mineralisation. The best ever drill intersection (8m @ 3.1% Cu) has been recorded in this drill program and the average width of the mineralisation has exceeded 10m. Discovery is very excited about these results and eagerly awaits the next batch of drill results to be received. - Web Site

Drilling Report (NW Paua 1, Cobra 1,) 31 January 2008
WELL NAME: NW Paua 1, PNG
Oil Search reports that as at 0600 hrs on 31 January, the NW Paua 1 well was cleaning out cement at 2,100 metres beneath the 11-¾" liner, prior to drilling ahead in a 10-5/8" hole from the current depth of 2,334 metres. During the week, cementing operations were conducted to improve hole integrity, in what appears to be a heavily fractured section.
NW Paua 1 is located in PDL 5, five kilometres northeast of the Moran oil field and six kilometres northwest of Paua 1x. Paua 1x was drilled on the steeply dipping and faulted forelimb of the Paua anticline in the mid 1990s and encountered oil shows in the Toro Sandstone and recovered oil from the Iagifu Sandstone. NW Paua 1 is targeting the Toro and Digimu sandstones in a more optimal location on the known hanging-wall structure. The planned total depth of the well is 3,400 metres.
WELL NAME: Cobra 1, PNG
Oil Search reports that the Cobra 1 well in PNG commenced drilling on 25 January. During the week, the hole was drilled to 167 metres in the Darai Limestone, but some subsidence has been observed at the well site and investigations are underway to allow this issue to be addressed before drilling ahead.
Cobra 1 is located in PPL 190 and lies 13 kilometres east of the SE Gobe oil field and 7 kilometres east of the Bilip oil discovery. The well is targeting the Iagifu Sandstone, which is the principal reservoir in the Gobe and SE Gobe fields, in a seismically-defined sub-thrust prospect. Cobra 1 is the first in PNG to target a sub-thrust play as the primary target.
The planned total depth of the well is 3,100 metres.
WELL NAME: Salma-1 ST, Egypt
Oil Search reports that as at 0600 hrs Egyptian time (+2 hrs GMT) on 30 January, the Salma-1ST well was at a depth of 2,296 metres and drilling ahead in an 8-1/2" hole. Progress for the week was 298 metres.
The Salma prospect is a high risk/high reward stratigraphic trap located in the East Ras Qattara concession, Western Desert, Egypt. The well is targeting the Bahariya, Kharita and for the first time in the East Ras Qattara drilling programme, the Alam el Boueib formation, which is a prolific reservoir elsewhere in the Western Desert of Egypt. The planned total depth of the well is 3,700 metres.
WELL NAME: South Gharib-X1, Egypt
Oil Search reports that as at 0600 hrs Egyptian time (+2 hrs GMT) on 30 January, the South Gharib-X1 exploration well was at a depth of 3,246 metres and reaming the wellbore. During the week, parts of the open hole section experienced instability, resulting in cavings that have to be reamed out of the hole prior to drilling ahead.
The South Gharib prospect is located in the Umm El Yusr Exploration area in the Area A concession, Eastern Desert, Egypt. The well is targeting the Cretaceous Nubia sandstones. The planned total depth of the well is 3,500 metres.
WELL NAME: Dahgah-1, Yemen
Oil Search reports that as at 0600 hrs Yemen time (+2 hrs GMT) on 30 January, the Dahgah-1 well was at a depth of 2,056 metres and drilling ahead in an 8-1/2"" hole. Progress for the week was 874 metres.
Dahgah-1 is located in Block 43, approximately five kilometres east of the Nabrajah Oil Field. The primary objective of the well is the Qishn clastics, being produced at Nabrajah. The planned total depth of the well is 2,500 metres.- Web Site

Drilling Update
RIVIANA FOODS #1 (TECHE PROSPECT)
Current Depth: 3,533.6 metres RT
Progress: Pick up new drill pipe. Run back in hole. Drill ahead to 3,533.6 m RT; pipe stuck. Back off pipe at 3,244m RT. Jar on stuck pipe. Run in hole with washover pipe.
Hydrocarbon Indications : Hydrocarbon shows will only be reported after wireline logs have been run and evaluated at the Total Depth of the well. The well will take approximately four weeks to drill to the programmed Total Depth of 3,810 metres (12,500 feet).
Primary and Secondary Targets : Drilling at the Teche prospect will target up to 22.4 Bcfe of potential recoverable gas and condensate in Oligocene age "Bol mex 2" sands. Additional potential is recognised in a number of other sands which will also be tested in an optimal position.
Comment : Advice from the operator subsequent to the last report is that they are making preparations to sidetrack the well. We will then drill approx 30m past the depth where we originally lost circulation, set a liner and then drill ahead.
Target Energy will earn a 10% Working Interest in the well (subject to completion of earning phase). - Web Site

Four historic prospects on these tenements, Johnnies Reward (Cu-Au), Pinnacles (Cu), Gecko (Cu-Pb-Zn) and Rankins (Cu-Pb-Zn), provide evidence of the tenor and style of mineralization sought by the Company. The area is considered highly prospective for iron oxide copper-gold of the Ernest Henry style, and structurally-modified, stratabound, polymetallic base metal mineralization. The Joint Venture represents Minotaur's maiden entry into the Northern Territory's minerals exploration sector, and adds to the Company's significant project activity in South Australia, the eastern seaboard and overseas in Canada and Spain. - Web Site

A still-anxious Wall Street closed lower Wednesday, sacrificing the advance it made after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates half a percentage point. The Federal Reserve lowered the fed funds rate, or the interest banks pay one another for overnight loans, to 3 percent, the lowest level since spring 2005. It also lowered the discount rate, or the interest the Fed charges on loans to banks, by a half-point to 3.50 percent.
The rate cuts came on the same day as fresh evidence arrived that the economy had slowed significantly in the final three months of 2007. Figures showed gross domestic product expanded at a slight 0.6 percent pace in the fourth quarter, less than half what had been expected. For all of 2007, gross domestic product grew 2.2 percent, the weakest rate since 2002.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about 3 to 2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 4.64 billion shares, up from Tuesday's 4.07 billion.
Copper fell for the first time in five sessions on renewed concern the U.S. will slip into a recession.
Gold rose to a record after the Federal Reserve lowered interest rates for the second time in nine days, weakening the dollar and boosting the appeal of the precious metal as an alternative investment.

Drilling at Wiluna confirms potential of three mine strategy
Apex Minerals NL (ASX: AXM) is pleased to announce encouraging results from its Wiluna Gold Mine in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia with resource and exploration drilling confirming the presence of high grade zones close to areas readily accessible from the existing underground development.
Recent drilling has largely focussed on infilling key zones in order to estimate an initial mineral resource by mid February, which is likely to comprise both Indicated and Inferred Resources. Drilling is continuing to infill the Inferred component of this resource with the aim of converting it to Indicated status in preparation for the feasibility study, which is on schedule for completion during the 2nd quarter of this year.
Key results from the recent resource drilling are shown in Figures 1 & 2 and summarised below:
Burgundy
These intersections confirm the internal continuity of the Burgundy mineralisation and extend its high grade core zone to over 200m in length within a broader 400m long zone. Furthermore, these zones remain open up plunge to the south and down plunge to the north (Figure 1).
Henry5
These intersections confirm the consistency of mineralisation within the Henry5 zone (Figure 2).
Henry5 North
These intersections confirm the consistency of mineralisation within the Henry5 North zone (Figure 2).
Calais
This intersection in conjunction with previously reported intersections of 4.6m @ 14.9g/t gold (est. 4.6m true width) from 80.3m in CADH750 and 5.4m @ 15.7g/t gold (est. 5.1m true width) from 79m in CADH755 confirm the consistent width and grade of mineralisation within previously unmined parts of the Calais orebody.
In addition to the resource drilling, exploration drilling has also intersected encouraging mineralisation in two new zones at the Scroop and Crispin targets, as summarised below:

Wall Street advanced Tuesday as the Federal Reserve opened a two-day meeting expected to bring another interest rate cut to revitalize the U.S. economy.
Advancing issues led decliners by a 2-to-1 basis on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.34 billion.
Investors did get some encouragement about the economy after the Commerce Department said orders for big-ticket items rose 5.2 percent in December, the biggest jump in five months.
Copper jumped the most in three weeks as rallying equity markets and the prospect of lower borrowing costs eased concern that a U.S. economic slowdown will curb metals demand.
Uranium fell to a three-month low after Australia and Kazakhstan, two of the world's three-biggest producers, reported higher output.
Australia increased uranium production by 13 percent last year to 10,145 metric tons, according to the Australian Uranium Association. Kazakhstan produced 6,637 tons in 2007, and plans to mine 45 percent more this year.

Brilliant Resource Statement Underway
Reverse circulation drilling on Carrick Gold's Brilliant Prospect at Kurnalpi, approximately 90 kilometres northeast of Kalgoorlie, has identified strong gold mineralisation in quartz veining over a surface distance of some 600 metres.
To date, 171 RC holes and 1 diamond hole have been undertaken to identify the structure which is open to the north and south and at depth. Previous drilling returned grades of up to 374g/t Au and 200g Ag.
Drilling conducted so far will form the basis of an initial JORC compliant Indicated and Inferred Resource and will also enable a working model to be constructed.
Recommencement of drilling at this exciting prospect is to continue in early February with efforts to be accelerated to bring the Resource to Measured status and to determine the extent of the structures at this location.- Web Site

Provided downhole conditions allow, the forward plan is to conduct a cement squeeze then set a 7 5/8" liner and resume drilling in 6 1/2" hole towards the primary target TD at 14,500'.
As reported earlier, 11 feet of gas pay has been identified in the Upper Marg Tex interval and a probable 5 feet of gas pay in the Lower Marg Tex interval of the Schwing #2 well.
The project is being operated by Spartan Operating Company, Inc. FAR's interest is subject to a back-in of 25% after cost recovery is achieved on a full project basis. Other participants include ASX listed Amadeus Energy Limited (AMU). - Web Site

XSTRATA COPPER ANNOUNCES SIGNIFICANT INCREASE TO COLLAHUASI MINERAL RESOURCE
Santiago, 28 January 2008
Xstrata Copper announces a 28% increase in the total estimated Mineral Resource at the Collahuasi copper mine in Chile, one of the world's largest copper deposits. Additional resources have been defined as a result of a successful drilling programme in 2007 and represent the equivalent of an additional 11 million tonnes of contained copper metal.
"The impressive results of last year's exploration programme are a credit to the Collahuasi management team and confirm Collahuasi's position as one of the world's great copper deposits, with enormous potential to expand its resource base further," said Xstrata Copper Chief Executive Charlie Sartain.
"This significant increase in resources clearly supports the business strategy approved and announced by the shareholders last year to more than double annual production to over 1 million tonnes of copper progressively over the coming years," he said.
The upgraded Mineral Resource of 5.19 billion tonnes at an average grade of 0.83% copper includes for the first time 746 million tonnes at a grade of 1.06% from the Rosario Oeste deposit. This compares to the previous Mineral Resource of 4.05 billion tonnes at an average grade of 0.80% copper as of 31 December 2006.
The Mineral Resource includes Ore Reserves of 2.20 billion tonnes at a grade of 0.82% copper, a 25% increase in tonnage from Ore Reserves of 1.76 billion tonnes at 0.89% copper at 31 December 2006. - Web Site

EXCELLENT HIGH GRADE NICKEL & COPPER INTERSECTION AT F-ZONE
Pilbara nickel explorer and producer, Fox Resources Limited (ASX: FXR) today announced that diamond drill hole 08RHDD086 (Figure 1) has intersected high grade nickel & copper massive sulphides in the F-Zone at the Company's Radio Hill nickel mine located 35km south of the township of Karratha in Western Australia.
Preliminary analysis of the massive sulphides (Figure 2) using a Niton portable XRF analyser (see disclaimer) has resulted in the best intersection of 2.8m at an estimated average grade of 3.44% nickel and 8.41% copper from 108.1m down hole depth. The total mineralised intersection analysed returned 6.1m at an estimated average grade of 1.81% nickel and 5.95% copper from 106.9m down hole depth.
As previously announced on 24 January 2008, mining of the last development level (975RL) intersected unexpected massive nickel and copper sulphides up to 4 metres thick. Assays of massive sulphide samples taken from the development returned excellent indicative results averaging 4.71% nickel and 9.06% copper. Previous drilling had indicated that the F-Zone had terminated at the 975RL.
Diamond hole 08RHDD086 was drilled at an estimated 25m below the 975RL development drive with results confirming that high grade nickel & copper sulphide mineralisation extends further down dip. The Company sees the F-Zone success as an important development for the following reasons:

A jittery Wall Street advanced Monday, reversing some of Friday's sharp losses as investors took a dismal new home sales report as a sign the Federal Reserve will lower rates this week. The Commerce Department reported sales of new homes in December fell by 4.7 percent and that 2007 new home sales plunged by a record 26.4 percent compared to 2006. While the report at first exacerbated the market's concern that the housing and mortgage crises are causing a recession, it also raised hopes that the Fed might cut rates again by a wide margin to stoke the weakening U.S. economy.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by nearly 3 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 3.96 billion shares, compared to 4.78 billion on Friday.
Asian trading saw steep losses as investors reacted to Friday's U.S. trading. In Tokyo, the Nikkei stock average dropped 4 percent and a key index in Shanghai plunged 7.2 percent.
Gold rose to a record US$929.80 an ounce in New York as the US dollar fell against the euro, enhancing the metal's appeal as an alternative investment. Platinum surged to the highest ever on South African supply concerns.
