WALL STREET

Stocks finished a strong week mostly flat Friday as investors tried to reconcile a weaker-than-expected estimate of first-quarter economic growth with fresh evidence that corporate profits remain robust. A modest advance in the Dow Jones industrials sent the blue chips to their third record close in as many days.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about 3 to 2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 2.7 billion shares, down from the heavy 3.14 billion shares traded Thursday.

The worst economic growth in four years is raising concern that troubles in the U.S. housing market will spread and throw the country into a recession before the year is out.
The economy practically crawled at a 1.3 percent pace in the opening quarter of 2007, the Commerce Department reported Friday. That was even weaker than the sluggish 2.5 percent rate in the closing quarter of last year. The main culprit in the slowdown: the housing slump, which made some businesses act cautiously. The bloated trade deficit also played a role.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, however, has said he doesn't believe the economic expansion, now in its sixth year, is in danger of fizzling out.

On Wall Street, blue-chip investors took the weak GDP showing in stride. The Dow Jones industrials rose 15.44 points to 13,120.94, the third record close in as many days. For the week, the Dow rose 1.2 percent.

An inflation gauge tied to the GDP report and closely watched by the Fed showed that core prices -- excluding food and energy -- rose at a rate of 2.2 percent in the first quarter, up from 1.8 percent in the fourth quarter.

Crude oil surged to the highest in almost eight months in New York and gasoline jumped after Saudi Arabian authorities said they had arrested more than 170 people suspected of plotting to attack the country's oil fields.

Copper rose in New York on speculation that a slumping dollar will encourage buyers holding other currencies to purchase the metal.

The U.S. currency dropped to an all-time low against the euro after a government report showed that the U.S. economy grew last quarter at the slowest pace in four years. A change in the dollar's value makes copper, traded in dollars, more or less expensive for buyers using other currencies. The metal has gained 16 percent in the past month.

Gold futures closed almost $4 higher Friday, boosted by the euro's record high against the dollar after data showed that the U.S. economy posted its weakest expansion in four years in the first quarter.
