Investor confidence suffered another blow Friday as disappointing reports on manufacturing and home sales stirred worries that the economy will struggle to recover.
Stocks fell for a third straight day to post their biggest weekly losses since early July. The reports on durable goods and sales of new homes reminded investors that while the economy might be improving, it might not do so in a straight line.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 42 points, bringing its three-day loss to 165.
Falling stocks narrowly outpaced those that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to a modest 4.6 billion shares compared with 5.6 billion Thursday.
For the week, the Dow lost 1.6 percent. It was the biggest slide since the week of July 10 and only the third losing week of the last 11. The S&P 500 index slid 2.2 percent for the week, while the Nasdaq fell 2 percent.
Oil rose 13 cents to settle at $66.02 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange as tension mounted over Iran's nuclear ambitions and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said he still supported a federal lending program that could press the dollar.
Copper prices rose after the US dollar weakened, boosting the metal's appeal as a hedge against inflation, and exchange-monitored inventories declined.
Gold futures on the COMEX Division of the New York Mercantile Exchange fell for the third straight session on Friday and closed lower for the first week in six, as investors opted to pocket profits after gold failed to make a new record high in recent rally. Silver and platinum both ended much lower.

Stocks fell for a second day Thursday after the National Association of Realtors said sales of existing homes dropped 2.7 percent in August after jumping 7.2 percent in July. Economists had expected sales would post their fifth straight monthly increase.
The market climbed in morning trading following a surprise drop in the number of people seeking unemployment benefits. The housing numbers upended that advance, however, and stocks never recovered. The Dow Jones industrial average ended with a loss of 41 points to bring its two-day drop to 122 points.
Three stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.6 billion shares and was flat with Wednesday.
A stronger US dollar weighed on the market by pushing commodity prices lower.
U.S. gold futures fell to a two-week low in heavy trading on Thursday, slipping below $1,000 an ounce, as the dollar rallied amid a wave of risk aversion, decreasing the appeal of gold as a currency hedge.

Stocks end lower despite better view from Fed
Stocks closed lower Wednesday as a brief rally followed the Fed's economic statement and then faded. The Dow came within 82 points of crossing 10,000 for the first time since October, but ended the day with a loss of 81.
Analysts said there were no surprises from the Fed meeting, though some investors worried that the Fed would pull its supports for the economy too soon.
The central bank's governors said the pace of economic activity has "picked up" since their last meeting in August, and they said they would keep short-term interest rates at historically low levels near zero "for an extended period."
Losing stocks outnumbered winners by about 3-to-2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.58 billion shares, up from 5.34 billion Tuesday.
The drop in oil prices weighed heavily on energy and industrial shares. The price of crude for November delivery tumbled nearly 4 percent, or $2.79, to settle at $68.97 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The decline in energy prices accelerated during the day after the government reported that supplies of crude, gasoline and distillate fuel surged above expectations.
Copper prices fell for the first time in three sessions as inventories rose to a four-month high, renewing concern that demand is easing.

A rebound in commodities drew investors back into the stock market and helped push stocks to new highs for 2009.
In an about-face, the US dollar weakened against other major currencies. That helped lift commodities like oil and gold as well as energy and material stocks. Financial stocks also rose sharply.
The gains came as the Federal Reserve began a two-day meeting on interest rates. The Fed is widely expected to keep rates at their record low of near zero for the time being.
More than two stocks rose every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.3 billion shares compared with 4.7 billion Monday.
Commodities rose as the U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of foreign currencies, fell 0.8 percent, after earlier hitting a fresh low for the year.
Oil futures jumped back above $US70 a barrel as a weaker US dollar signalled easing concerns that the Fed would adjust its monetary policy this week.
Copper prices rose for a second day as the US dollar weakened, boosting demand for commodities as a hedge against inflation.
U.S. gold futures rose toward $1,020 an ounce on Tuesday, gaining 1 percent as a sharp deterioration of the dollar's value triggered investment buying in gold as a currency hedge.
Rumours are that Beijing is suggesting it may put up its hand for the entire 403 tonnes of the yellow metal about to be put on sale by the International Monetary Fund.

Most stocks lost ground Monday as a stronger US dollar pushed down commodity prices and investors grew jittery about the market's six-month rally.
The dollar rose against other major currencies, sending prices for gold, oil and other commodities tumbling. Commodities are priced in US dollars, so a stronger greenback makes them less appealing for foreign investors.
Oil dropped $2.33 to settle at $69.71 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, driving energy stocks lower.
Two stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 4.7 billion shares compared with 6.1 billion Friday when trading was heavy because of the expiration of options contracts.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 1.91, or 0.3 percent, to 615.97.
Copper prices rose after a report showed the index of U.S. leading economic indicators climbed for a fifth month, boosting the outlook for metals demand.
Oil traders are paying more than ever in the options market to protect against a plunge in crude prices. The gap between prices of options betting on a decline and those that would profit from a rise in oil widened to a record 10 percentage points, according to five years of data compiled by Banc of America Securities-Merrill Lynch.
Crude stockpiles in the U.S. are 14 percent larger than a year ago and OPEC is pumping 600,000 barrels a day more than the world needs, according to the International Energy Agency.
