Stocks closed mostly lower, as losses among health care stocks offset small gains in technology companies. The Dow Jones industrials lost about 36 points, breaking an eight-day winning streak.
Trading was quiet, as it has been all week, as summer vacations kept many traders out of the market.
Advancing issues narrowly outpaced decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a relatively low 5.81 billion shares, down from 5.82 billion on Thursday.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed the week up 38.24, or 0.4 percent, at 9,544.20. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.80, or 0.3 percent, to 1,028.93. The Nasdaq composite index rose 7.87, or 0.4 percent, to 2,028.77.
The Russell 2000 index, which tracks the performance of small company stocks, fell 1.65, or 0.3 percent, for the week to 581.51.
Crude oil and gasoline gained for a second day after U.S. consumer confidence beat forecasts, a sign that the economy is recovering from the worst recession since World War II.
Copper climbed to an 11-month high, buoyed by improving economic and demand expectations, and maintained strong levels into the close on Friday, as many players settled their books for the month. London metal markets will be closed on Monday for Britain's summer bank holiday.
Gold futures rose to a three-week high on signs of increasing investor demand. Silver had the biggest gain in almost four months.

Major indexes overcame early losses and finished slightly higher, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which added 37 points to set a fresh 2009 high. The Dow has risen for eight straight days, its longest winning streak since April 2007.
Trading lacked enthusiasm, however, as it has over the past week, with many investors shying away from making greater commitments to stocks.
Volume has been extremely light as many traders go on vacation, adding to the market's recent choppiness. The day's economic news, including a slightly smaller-than-expected dip in initial unemployment claims and a benign reading on gross domestic product, did little to excite investors.
About eight stocks rose for every seven that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.82 billion shares, compared with 5.10 billion shares on Wednesday.
Oil prices settled more than $1 higher Thursday, reversing directions several times toward the end of a volatile trading week.
Copper prices eased on a gain in metal inventories and speculation that demand from China will drop.

Fairview and Langi Logan Gold Prospects
Beaconsfield Gold has 100% of the Fairview gold prospect at Stavely in western Victoria and is earning a 75% interest in the Langi Logan gold prospect located close to Ararat and approximately 40km by road to the north-east of the Stavely project (refer Figure 1).
Both gold prospects are discrete from, although close to, the Company's copper deposits at Thursdays Gossan and Mt Ararat. Beaconsfield Gold announced on 17 August that it is looking at alternatives to unlock the value of the copper project, including an IPO and/or a JV and off-take agreement. Irrespective of what the Company may do with its copper interests, Beaconsfield Gold intends to retain all of its gold interests in western Victoria.
Beaconsfield Gold considers Langi Logan to be a very prospective Stawell-style basalt dome gold target. Stawell, approximately 30 km to the north west of Langi Logan, is a multi-million ounce gold deposit, so Langi Logan and the other basalt dome targets thought to exist in the Ararat area represent large targets. Beaconsfield Gold is encouraged that historical alluvial gold production of 600,000 ounces has been reported from the Ararat area but significant bedrock sources for that gold have yet to be found.
Previous explorers had carried out various geophysical programs to identify potential basalt domes in the Ararat area and follow up shallow drilling by Newcrest in 2005 confirmed the Langi Logan basalt dome and the location of the prospective sediments immediately to the west of the dome. Newcrest in 2006 drilled a single diamond hole (RCDAR179) to test those sediments and intersected 2 metres down hole at 9.2 g/t gold from 228 metres. No follow up holes to test the prospect have been drilled to date. Beaconsfield Gold has recently examined the core from the single Newcrest hole and confirmed that the gold mineralisation is Stawell-style.
Further work to advance both the Fairview and Langi Logan gold prospects is planned to commence in September as follows:

After ranging between gains and losses Wednesday, the Dow Jones industrials managed to rise for a seventh straight day, marking another high for the year.
But there was hardly any excitement. The Dow rose just 4 points, while other major indexes gained less than 1 point despite positive reports on home sales and factory orders.
Declining stocks narrowly outnumbered advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to a light 5.10 billion shares, down from 5.74 billion shares on Tuesday.
In other trading, the Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 0.80, or 0.1 percent, to 584.02.
An increasingly cautious mood has gripped the market in recent days, following a period of fervid buying this spring and summer that sent stocks up more than 45 percent since early March.
Oil prices fell further Wednesday after the government reported an increase in crude supplies. Light, sweet crude fell 62 cents to $71.43 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Gold and silver futures eased as the dollar's rebound reduced the appeal of commodities as alternative investments.

Farm-out and joint venture agreement with China Yunnan Copper Australia limited
Copper, uranium, gold
Mary Kathleen project, Mount Isa region
Goldsearch Limited (ASX: GSE) announced today it has entered into a farm-out and joint venture agreement with China Yunnan Copper Australia Limited (ASX: CYU) to explore GSE's Mary Kathleen Project consisting of three tenement areas covering approximately 161 square kilometres of ground considered prospective for copper, gold, uranium and rare earth elements (REE) mineralisation within the Mount Isa Inlier of north-west Queensland.
The agreement relates to three granted exploration permits (EPM 14019, EPM 14022 and EPM 15257). These tenements are adjacent to granted exploration permit (EPM 15248) which is currently being explored by CYU (Figure 1). GSE has granted CYU the right to farm-in to the tenements upon the fulfilment of expenditure obligations in relation to exploring for all minerals. GSE and CYU have further agreed that if CYU completes these obligations satisfactorily they will form a joint venture for the purpose of conducting further exploration and undertaking development and mining.
CYU and GSE consider the targets and fertile structures identified from geophysical and geochemical surveys warrant immediate investigation by detailed ground geophysical surveys and drilling. It is the intention of CYU to prioritise the investigation of the targets already identified by GSE within the tenements.
Shallow drilling has occurred at many of these old copper prospects and workings (Figure 2). Significant results include a best intersection of 26 metres @ 0.86% copper at the Mount Dorothy prospect where a zone of gossanous ironstone occurs over 1 kilometre strike length. Depth extensions of significant drill intersections at the Mount Dorothy prospect and Sirotem anomalies not explained by the drilling remain to be tested.
At Elaine Dorothy, (Figure 2) previous exploration by Mary Kathleen Uranium (former operators of the Mary Kathleen Mine) and GSE has highlighted significant Mary Kathleen-style uranium (and REE) mineralisation. Further drilling is required to adequately test mineralisation defined to date (eg: 2.3 metres @ 0.262% uranium oxide (U3O8) 9.5 metres @ 0.036% U3O8 and 2 metres @ 0.134% U3O8). For reference the mined out Mary Kathleen Reserve was 9.2 million tonnes @ 0.12% U3O8.... - Web Site

A rebound in consumer confidence and more healing in the housing industry have put stocks back on an upward path.
Stocks rose after the Conference Board said its Consumer Confidence Index jumped to 54.1 this month from an upwardly revised 47.4 in July. That was far above the 47.5 reading analysts expected. But the report is a long way from showing that consumers are actually feeling optimistic about the economy amid ongoing worries about job losses.
Banks, retailers and homebuilders were Tuesday's biggest winners, helping to lift the major indexes about 0.3 percent. Energy and utility stocks fell sharply, and limited the overall market's advance, as oil prices cooled following a recent surge.
About three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.74 billion shares, down from Monday's 6.32 billion.
Oil prices sank 3% Tuesday as dealers rushed to take profits from a rally that had culminated in a 10-month peak earlier in the day.
Copper prices fell the most in a week as higher inventories and declines in Asian equities revived speculation that demand will slow in China, the world’s largest buyer of the metal.

Stocks pulled back from early highs as financials, which have been surging lately, retreated. Meanwhile, Treasury prices rallied ahead of the next round of debt auctions.
The Dow rose 3.32, or less than 0.1 percent, to 9,509.28, after earlier rising as much as 82 points. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.56, or 0.1 percent, to 1,025.57, while the Nasdaq composite index fell 2.92, or 0.1 percent, to 2,017.98.
Advancing issues were slightly ahead of losers on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 6.32 billion shares, up from Friday's 5.98 billion.
In other trading, the Russell 2000 index of smaller companies slipped 1.27, or 0.2 percent, to 580.24.
Oil prices rallied to a 10-month high near $75 a barrel Monday, part of a broad global rally in commodities and equities markets propelled by expectations for an economic recovery.
Copper rose, closing at the highest price in 11 months, as comments by the world's biggest central banks signaled optimism for a recovery by the global economy.
Gold declined the most in a week as the US dollar climbed, eroding the metal's appeal as an alternative investment.
