Stocks fell sharply Friday, taking the major indexes down about 1 percent, after investors were disappointed by reports that the Reuters/University of Michigan index of consumer sentiment fell significantly short of expectations for the first part of August. That's a sign consumers may well keep cutting back their spending as they worry about losing their jobs.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 76.79, or 0.8 percent, to 9,321.40 after falling as much as 165 points after the consumer sentiment survey was released.
The S&P 500 index fell 8.64, or 0.9 percent, to 1,004.09, while the Nasdaq composite index fell 23.83, or 1.2 percent, to 1,985.52.
About five stocks fell for every two that rose Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a light 1.09 billion shares. Light volume can exaggerate the market's movements.
Investors also sold off oil and other commodities and moved their money into the relative safety of the dollar and government bonds.
The Dow was down 0.5 percent for the week, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.6 percent and the Nasdaq was off 0.7 percent.
Crude oil fell to a two-week low and gasoline tumbled after a report showed that confidence among U.S. consumers unexpectedly declined in August, bolstering skepticism that fuel demand will rebound this year.
Copper prices fell along with most other commodities. Shanghai copper stockpiles climbed for a third week by 20 percent this week to the highest since August 2007, the Shanghai Futures Exchange said in a report on its Web site.
Gold futures ended lower on Friday, falling below $950 an ounce as the US dollar rose and oil tumbled amid lackluster U.S. consumer confidence data, which dampened gold's appeal as a hedge against inflation.

Unexpected economic growth out of Germany and France helped set a positive tone this morning, but a generally disappointing batch of U.S. economic data undermined the bias, leaving stocks to trade with modest gains for most of the session.
Focused on an economic recovery, investors shook off disappointing news and kept Wall Street's summer rally going.
Among the day's reports, the Commerce Department said retail sales fell 0.1 percent in July, significantly worse than the 0.7 percent increase economists expected.
A weekly report on unemployment also came in worse than projected. The Labor Department said the number of newly laid-off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly to a seasonally adjusted 558,000, from 554,000 the previous week.
Advancing stocks outpaced losers by 2 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume fell to a light 5.3 billion shares from 5.5 billion shares a day earlier.
Treasury prices rose after the government had a successful auction of 30-year bonds. The Treasury Department issued a total of $75 billion of debt this week as part of its ongoing efforts to fund the government's stimulus programs, and investors were relieved that the market was able to absorb such a huge supply.
Copper rose to the highest price in 10 months on speculation that demand will revive after the Federal Reserve suggested the U.S. recession is easing and second-quarter growth was reported in Germany and France.
Most other metals also jumped.

A more upbeat Federal Reserve is reassuring investors that they've been making the right bets. Stocks bounded higher Wednesday after the central bank said the economy appears to be "leveling out" rather than simply shrinking at a slower rate. The Fed's more positive take on the economy compared with its assessment in June wasn't surprising but it still bolstered hopes that the economy is in fact rebounding.
The central bank left interest rates unchanged, as expected, following a two-day policy meeting.
The Fed also said it would slow the pace of its program to buy $300 billion worth of Treasury securities so that it will close at the end of October, rather than September as originally intended. The central bank has bought $253 billion of the securities so far. The program is designed to reduce rates on mortgages and other consumer debt.
Rising stocks outpaced those that fell 5-to-2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a light 1.2 billion shares, flat with Tuesday.
Oil futures rose today despite a report showing demand in the world's biggest economy was still at its weakest in years. Oil and fuel continue to pile up in storage. US oil inventories have increased for three consecutive weeks, and were nearly 20 per cent above last year's levels, the Department of Energy said in its weekly inventory report.
Metals consultancy GFMS is predicting a sharp fall in the copper price short term, but a recovery and further advances later in the years. GFMS is concerned that continuing copper consumption declines look like they may more than offset by production losses through the remainder of the year and that if this becomes apparent to investors and purchasers we could see a short-term sharp drop in the copper price during the next few weeks.
Gold advanced for a second straight day as the US dollar weakened, boosting the appeal of precious metals as alternative assets. Silver gained, while platinum and palladium declined.
Cameco Corp., the world's second- largest uranium producer, said power utilities in China are continuing to stockpile uranium, making them the market's single-largest group of buyers.

The major indexes fell 1 percent Tuesday as investors feared that the market's steep gains in the past month could unravel if the economy doesn't show more signs of strengthening. Warnings about the health of banks and uneasiness ahead of the Federal Reserve's economic statement Wednesday led investors to dump financial stocks and wade into defensive areas like consumer staples companies and government debt.
About three stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 5.8 billion shares, compared with 5.4 billion Monday.
Energy prices eased Tuesday on a Labor Department report that suggested consumer spending, a major economic driver, may be depressed for some time as companies cut back.
Benchmark crude for September delivery fell $1.15 to settle at $69.45 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was the fourth straight day of declines and the first time this month that the price for crude dipped below $69.
Copper prices fell for the second straight day as declining U.S. equities spurred concern that the economy will remain sluggish.
China's imports of copper and the metal's products in July dropped for the first time in six months, declining from a record, after stockpiles increased in the world's largest consumer.

Stocks fell on Monday, but were off their session lows, as investors booked profits following a four-week rally that took the broad S&P 500 index to a 10-month high on Friday.
Volume was low on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1.09 billion shares changing hands, below last year's estimated daily average of 1.49 billion. On the Nasdaq about 1.86 billion shares traded, well below last year's daily average of 2.28 billion.
Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a ratio of 8 to 7, while on the Nasdaq, about 14 stocks fell for every 13 that rose.
Crude oil fell for a third day in New York as equities declined and the dollar rebounded against the euro, reducing the need for commodities as an alternate investment.
Gold fell, extending losses to the longest slide in five months, as declining equities and a rising dollar reduced demand for bullion as a hedge against inflation.
