Stocks surge on relief over unemployment, banks
The Labor Department said employers cut 539,000 jobs last month -- the fewest in six months and much fewer than analysts had expected. The U.S. jobless rate jumped to 8.9 percent in April.
Bank shares surged after the government released report cards on the nation's 19 largest financial institutions. With the "stress tests" results out and easing fears about the stability of banks, investors could check another item off their list of worries.
Surging bank stocks have lifted the Standard & Poor's 500 index a dizzying 37.4 percent since early March.
The dissipating worries sent the Dow charging higher by 164.80 points, or 2 percent, to 8,574.65. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 21.84, or 2.4 percent, to 929.23, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 22.76, or 1.3 percent, to 1,739.00.
About six stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 7.9 billion shares compared with 8.7 billion shares traded Thursday.
For the week, the Dow is up 4.4 percent, trimming its losses for 2009 to only 200 points, or 2.3 percent. It was the eighth gain for the index in nine weeks. The S&P 500 index jumped 5.9 percent, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 1.2 percent after logging bigger gains in recent weeks than other indicators.
Oil prices rose Friday as signs of economic renewal in the world's biggest consumer of crude raised bets that energy demand will pick up.
Light, sweet crude for June delivery rose $1.92 to settle at $58.63 a barrel.
Copper dropped for the second straight day on speculation that economic reports failed to show enough evidence of a recovery to justify a rally that boosted prices by half this year.
Gold rose in London, heading for a weekly gain, on speculation central-bank measures to revive economies will spur inflation and demand for bullion as a hedge.

Weak demand at a Treasury bond auction touched off worries in the stock market Thursday about the government's ability to raise funds to fight the recession.
The government's long-awaited "stress-test" results have found that 10 of the nation's 19 largest banks need a total of about $75 billion in new capital to withstand losses if the recession worsened. The Federal Reserve's findings, released Thursday, show the financial system, like the overall economy, is healing but not yet healed.
Major stocks market indicators slid more than 1 percent, including the Dow Jones industrial average which lost 102 points after gaining nearly the same amount Wednesday.
Two stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a heavy 2 billion shares.
In economic news, new applications for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in 14 weeks. The Labor Department's tally of new jobless claims fell to 601,000 from 631,000 the previous week, well below the 635,000 economists had been expecting.
Oil prices settled slightly higher Thursday, giving back strong gains from earlier in the session, after a big selloff on Wall Street overshadowed optimism about the economic outlook and future energy demand.
Copper fell from a three-week high in New York as equity markets slid, renewing concern that the global recession may keep restraining metals demand.

Investors felt more confident putting their money into banks on the eve of a government report card on big financial companies. Bank stocks pulled the market higher Wednesday as media reports trickled out that indicated balance sheets at major lenders might not be as frayed as some had feared.
The news on banks and a surprise drop in a report on unemployment provided the latest shots of confidence to the market. The ADP National Employment Report said private sector employment fell by 491,000 last month, a huge improvement from the 708,000 jobs lost in March.
Two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a large 1.9 billion shares.
Oil prices settled Wednesday at the highest price in almost five months after a weekly inventory report said supplies increased much less than expected. The Energy Information Administration said stockpiles of gasoline increased by 600,000 barrels in the week ended May 1. Analysts expected an increase of 2.2 million barrels, according to a consensus estimate compiled by Platts, an energy information provider. Light, sweet crude rose $2.50, or more than 4.6%, to settle at $56.34 Wednesday.
Copper prices jumped the most in a month after an industry report showed that the U.S. lost fewer jobs than expected in April, renewing speculation that the worst of the global recession may be over.
Gold climbed for the third straight day as slowing U.S. job losses raised prospects for an economic recovery and revived inflation, boosting demand for precious metals as a hedge. Platinum, palladium and silver also rose.

Traders collected a few profits Tuesday, leaving the major indexes with minimal losses, as the market waited for key reports on the government's assessment of banks' health and the latest numbers on jobs.
About eight stocks fell for every seven that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a modest 1.5 billion shares.
Oil prices eased Tuesday as investors weighed concern about weak demand and flush supplies against signs that the economy may be stabilizing.

Surging stocks vault S&P 500 higher for the year as pending home sales data boost mood
A double dose of good housing news ignited the advance: Pending U.S. home sales rose more than forecast and had their second straight monthly gain, while construction spending rose unexpectedly in March after five straight declines.
With Monday's gain, the S&P has soared 34.1 percent in the 39 trading days since the rally began, its steepest gain over that many days since 1933. The Dow, meanwhile, is up 28.7 percent.
About five stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 6.9 billion shares compared with 5.2 billion shares traded Friday.
The S&P 500, the market barometer preferred by professional investors, is now up 0.4 percent for 2009.
Oil prices rose Monday as investors responded to better-than-expected readings on pending home sales and construction spending.
New York gold futures rose nearly 2 percent to a one-week high on Monday, finishing above $900 an ounce on a combination of weaker dollar, renewed inflation worries and signs of rising physical demand from top bullion consumer India.
Copper continued to rise - inventories on the LME fell below 400,000 tons Friday, down more than 100,000 tons, or 21%, from a month ago, according to the exchange's latest data.
Also helping copper move higher, China's Purchasing Manager's Index climbed for a second month to 53.5 in April, the Federation of Logistics and Purchasing reported Friday. A reading above 50 indicates growth.
