Wall Street put together a moderate advance in light post-Christmas trading Friday after the government threw a lifeline to General Motors' financing arm, but gains were limited by dreary holiday shopping readings that dimmed the chance of a big year-end rally.
Advancing issues were ahead of decliners on the New York Stock Exchange by more than 3 to 1. Consolidated volume came to an extremely light 1.71 billion shares.
For the week, the Dow ended down 0.74 percent, the S&P 500 fell 1.7 percent and the Nasdaq lost 2.17 percent.
Crude oil rose more than 6 percent in New York, the biggest increase in two weeks, after the United Arab Emirates said it would reduce output to comply with OPEC’s supply curbs.
Copper prices rebounded from a four- year low on speculation demand for the metal will pick up in 2009 as the U.S. economy climbs out of a recession.
Gold prices rose the most in a week as mounting tensions in the Middle East and South Asia boosted the appeal of the precious metal as a haven.
Palestinian militants yesterday launched their biggest rocket attack on southern Israel in at least six months after a truce expired Dec. 19. Pakistani troops are being diverted from tribal areas near Afghanistan to the border with India, the Associated Press reported.

Wall Street rose modestly in very light holiday trading Wednesday after the government released downbeat, but unsurprising, readings on rising U.S. joblessness and declining consumer spending. The Commerce Department said consumer spending dropped 0.6 percent in November -- the fifth straight monthly drop -- and durable goods orders fell 1 percent in November.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by about 3 to 2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume amounted to 1.4 billion shares.
Crude-oil prices fell after a government report showed a bigger-than-expected increase in U.S. supplies of gasoline and distillate fuel, which includes heating oil and diesel.
Nickel, zinc and copper fell as a global economic slowdown weakened demand for industrial metals used in manufacturing and construction.
Zinc stockpiles tracked by the London Metal Exchange rose 8.1 percent to the highest level since May 2006 and nickel inventories are up 62 percent this year. Copper supplies in LME warehouses are the highest in four years, contributing to a 68 percent plunge in prices since reaching a record in July.
Gold prices rose on speculation the recession will deepen, boosting the appeal of the precious metal as a haven. Silver and platinum also gained.

Wall Street pulled back again Tuesday in muted trading ahead of the holiday, as another round of reports showed further deterioration in the housing market and broader economy.
The Dow Jones industrial average finished lower for the fifth straight day, falling 100 points.
Declining issues led advancers by 3 to 2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a very light 984.54 million shares.
The Commerce Department reiterated Tuesday that third-quarter gross domestic product, a measure of the economy that tallies the value of goods and services, fell at an annual rate of 0.5 percent.
The government also said sales of new homes fell in November to the slowest pace in nearly 18 years, while prices of new homes dropped by the biggest amount in eight months.
Sales of existing homes keep dropping as well. The National Association of Realtors said existing home sales fell 8.6 percent to an annual rate of 4.49 million in November from a downwardly revised pace of 4.91 million in October.
Oil prices fell on concerns that energy demand is evaporating in the face of a severe global economic slowdown. Light, sweet crude fell 93 cents to settle at $38.98 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after dipping below $38 earlier in the day.
Copper prices fell to the lowest in four years as surging inventories signaled a slowdown in metal demand by builders and manufacturers.
Tin tumbled to the cheapest price since November 2006.
Gold prices fell on speculation that a drop in commodity costs will damp demand for precious metals as a hedge against inflation. Silver and platinum also declined.

Hedging and Debt Facility Update
MDL wishes to advise changes to its commodity hedge position and associated project related debt facilities.
The company has increased and reorganised its gold hedge position to 399,000 ounces at a flat forward delivery price of US$846 per ounce (previously 179,500 ounces at US$861/oz). This gold is for delivery at quarterly intervals in various amounts that reflect the gold production schedule over the period from May 2009 to February 2013.
In addition, MDL has entered into hedge agreements with respect to the oil price over the same four year period. Sabodala Gold Operations SA (SGO) is a large user of both diesel and heavy fuel oil for its mining fleet and dedicated power station. The company has now secured some of its forward energy operating costs during the debt repayment period. Energy costs are the single largest operating expense. MDL has hedged 80,000 barrels per annum for four years at a flat forward price of US$70 per barrel. Contract deliveries are due at quarterly intervals during this period. These contracts settle against Nymex Light Sweet Crude closing prices and represent approximately 50% of the company 's Sabodala mine 's expected energy consumption during the period.
All hedging has been done with Macquarie Bank Limited (MBL).
SGO is a 90%-owned subsidiary of MDL. It currently has fully drawn project related debt facilities of US$25 million. In addition, MDL has a fully drawn US$35 million working capital facility at corporate level. At the end of March 2009, the corporate facility will reach term and be due for renegotiation. In the current extremely constrained debt markets, the board of MDL has been unwilling to risk a routine rollover of this line. Accordingly, MDL has sought to increase the secured project facilities to enable repayment of the corporate facility, if required, when it falls due. In this way, MDL can match the debt maturity and security with the cash flows from its main producing asset. As a result of the changed hedge structures, MBL has agreed to extend the project related debt facilities from the current US$25 million to US$52 million, which would allow flexible management of the corporate debt facility.
The construction phase of the Sabodala Gold Project is nearing completion and on schedule to commence full commissioning from mid January 2009 as advised in recent announcements. - Web Site

OZ Minerals Resources Explanatory Notes - Web Site
Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves Statement as at 30 June 2008
OZ Minerals today released its Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves Statement as at 30 June 2008.
OZ Minerals ' Executive Group Manager - Exploration, Tony Manini, said "the Statement shows significant year-on-year increases in OZ Minerals ' Group Mineral Resources with gold up 19%, copper up 22.1% and zinc up slightly 2.3%.
"Silver and lead decreased slightly by 2.7% and 3.4% respectively while nickel fell significantly (78%) due to the exclusion of the Wiluna nickel laterite resource," he said.
OZ Minerals ' Group Mineral Resources (contained metal) as at 30 June 2008 are estimated to contain 19.0 million ounces of gold, 396.7 million ounces of silver, 5.9 million tonnes of copper, 18.2 million tonnes of zinc, 2.6 million tonnes of lead and 0.2 million tonnes of nickel.
OZ Minerals Group Ore Reserves (contained metal) as at June 30 2008 were 4.24 million ounces gold, 90.59 million ounces silver, 1.91 million tonnes copper, 5.13 million tonnes, 0.6 million tonnes lead and 0.04 million tonnes nickel.
This represents a year-on-year Reserve increase of 0.03 million tonnes for copper (2%) and decreases of 0.02 million ounces gold (1%), 12.84 million ounces silver (12%), 18.5k tonnes nickel (33%), 1.11 million tonnes zinc (18%) and 0.1 million tonnes lead (14%).
Mr Manini said "the strong lift in Group copper and gold Mineral Resources has resulted primarily from the addition of several new discoveries at Prominent Hill and Sepon. However, these discoveries require extensive infill drilling to lift resource confidence before an initial Ore Reserve can be established.
"Likewise at Golden Grove and Rosebery, significant new discoveries made over the past two years require extensive infill drilling prior to establishing Ore Reserves.
"Pleasingly, drilling subsequent to this 30 June 2008 Statement across our sites indicates potential for increases to Ore Reserves and Mineral Resources," he concluded.
A detailed breakdown of these estimates along with the methods and assumptions used are contained in the attached Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve tables, together with the accompanying Explanatory notes.- Web Site

Wall Street began a holiday-shortened week cautiously Monday, slipping as investors reacted to a bleak outlook from Toyota Motor Corp. and disappointing earnings from drugstore operator Walgreen Co. Toyota slashed its earnings forecast for a second time, warning that it expects to report an operating loss for the fiscal year through March. It would be the Japanese automaker's first such loss since it began reporting results in 1941.
Also weighing on stocks was Caterpillar Inc., which said it will cut executive compensation in 2009 because of waning demand for mining and construction equipment.
On the New York Stock Exchange, declining issues outnumbered advancers by more than 2 to 1. Consolidated volume came to 4.31 billion shares, down from 6.04 billion shares on Friday.
Light, sweet crude for February delivery fell $2.45, or nearly 6 percent, to settle at $39.91 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Copper rose in New York on speculation that demand from China, the world's biggest consumer of the metal, will rise after the Bank of China cut borrowing costs to support the economy as exports dwindle. China's benchmark one-year lending rate will fall by 27 basis points to 5.31 percent from 5.58 percent and the deposit rate will drop to 2.25 percent from 2.52 percent tomorrow.
Gold rose, halting a two-session slide, as a decline in the dollar revived the appeal of the precious metal as an alternative investment. Silver was little changed.
